In the eye of the beholder
The more I sit here and think about it, the more thankful I am that most of the world's priceless artwork was completed (and in many cases, commissioned by the Church itself) before today's so-called "Judeo-Christian" standard / ethic came into place. What a truly boring, bland world full of "safe" Thomas Kinkade paintings it would be...

[what is art]

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

I like Picasso's butt, the best.

I'm sure the child of that butt-model was scarred for life that their parent posed for a nude portrait though...

Totally and thouroughly missed my point.

I can see I am not dealing with very open minded and intelligent people here, so adieu.

Farewell.

My standard line about the Catholic church is that in its long history, it has produced only two worthwhile things: art and music. And all the really good stuff is a couple of hundred years old.

I'm a recovering Catholic, and I feel that status affords me the freedom to make that type of critique.

And just look at how full-figured all those women are! No stick figures with gravity-defying breasts!

My mistake, thoroughly, for all of you grammer and spelling cops out there (those who can come up with nothing to debate the point usually point out the petty spelling mistakes one makes)

For real, adieu.

Please, please tell me that you're not one of those pathetic losers that posts "I'm going now. No really. I'm gone. Don't try to stop me. I mean it this time. This is me... Leaving... Here I go.", repeatedly, trying to get us to beg you to stay. Again. Farewell.

See, I thought the previous post and comment thread, as well as this new one, were dealing intelligently with the issue. Just because people don't agree with you doesn't mean they're not open minded or intelligent. They just don't agree with you.

Ex-actly bhw.

"those who can come up with nothing to debate the point usually point out the petty spelling mistakes one makes"

And those who can't convince the rest of the kiddies in the sandbox that their way is the only way, or else -- usually take off in a very public huff tossing around "unintelligent" insults and the like.

When in Paris on the saccharinmoon (like a honeymoon but with less calories), I took tons of pics of the artwork, statues, and such. When showing them to my mom (who is a fundy), she had a cow about how 'people who call themselves by the name of God could stomach such autrocities in their houses of worship'.

(I'm still laughing on that line)

Farewell and adieu
to you fair Spanish ladies
Farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain
For we received orders
for to sail back to Boston
And soon never more
will we see you again.

Quint was the shit.

I didn't even think about all of the art. The more I think about it, the less importance I place on "what people will think" about my boobie flashing. Apart from certain areas and narrow minded folk (not just comments on here, but the world in general), I think we live in a pretty liberal society.

Rob, are you having an epiphany that needs sharing...?

¤ ¤ credit: Sekimori | 04.17.03 at 10:31 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Yay! (just general nekkid merriment)

Let's not forget that John Ashcroft covered the boobies on the statues of our Dept. of Justice so he wouldn't be seen standing in front of naked stone breasts.

And that's how conservative our government is, folks!

late checkin in here but i'm 27 year old female married 9 years with TWO children aged 7 and 3 and the art in OUR house is black and white nudes....sigh, such beauty.

art is in the eye of the beholder - it is a shame to me that someone can proclaim any of the art you have displayed or any art period to be anything but beauty.

if you don't like, don't view it

I think I stopped using the line "I'll take my ball and go home" when I was six.

Jesus -- is it pissy shithead night or what? I love the "you don't agree with me and keep arguing with me so therefore you don't have an open mind and are not interested in intellectually stimulating discussion" bullocks.

PS: I believe a lot of the naked lady paintings were painted for "private" audiences. Of course artists could get around that by painting a lot of classical scenes, since that was how the ancient Greeks did it. And artists belonged to a class that was "allowed" to act in a manner not permitted to the "common people." And there was plenty of hypocrisy then, too -- if not more so -- than there is today.

PPS: I believe that the John Ashcroft boob-covering story has been stretched into mythos, and the actual reason for using a plain backdrop for press conferences -- a screen, not blanket over the statue -- was rather more prosaic, having to do with camera lighting and so on. Though I can imagine the decision was probably helped along by the realization that speakers in that hall were shown talking in front of a giant marble boob. I don't know where I read this, it's been quite some time. Insert the usual caveat here about me not being a huge fan of J.A., etc.

It's amazing how all those works speak to me. It's more of a "celebration of the beauty of human anatomy". I don't really see "nekkid people". (Well, to be honest, I always questioned why all of DaVinci's men have such tiny peckers... but besides that...)

¤ ¤ credit: -e- | 04.18.03 at 03:31 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

oh wait... I meant Michelangelo not DaVinci. (I can't look at "The David" without snickering.)

¤ ¤ credit: -e- | 04.18.03 at 03:35 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Well, I am one of those sad, sad people who does have kids and who does participate in the awful charade of regularly attending church and *gasp* believing in God. And guess what? God created those boobies! Yay God!!

More to the point is the fact that if we all spent a little more time listening to what Jesus said (ya know that whole "Love thy neighbor as thyself" foolishness), then we wouldn't be worrying about whether or not someone's naked form shows up on the Internet. We'd be filled with joy as to WHY it was done - helping a beautiful person being feel a little less lonely at Thanksgiving and trying to cure cancer to boot!

If everyone on this side of the Atlantic were a little less SHOCKED by nudity, none of this would be such a big deal. Of course, then the Boobie Project wouldn't have drawn so much attention, I guess. So, at least that was in your favor.

Aw crap... now I'm spouting off on religion and calling Statia a beautiful person. I need more coffee...

I'm just happy to see curvey women for a change. Imagine if the art classics were painted with todays cultural ideal of womanly beauty (which I don't share)?

¤ ¤ credit: Jon | 04.18.03 at 11:26 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Oh, what Jon... you don't like girls all bony and anorexic?

Heh heh. Me neither.
I used to work at a lingere company in Manhattan, they had models in there all the time... Not impressive at all. They kind of looked like bulimic aliens. EEP! Like I always say: "Bones are for dogs. Meat is for men".

¤ ¤ credit: -e- | 04.18.03 at 01:12 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

but newd-ah-tay is a seee-un. or something. *sigh*

¤ ¤ credit: tanya | 04.18.03 at 02:07 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Yay to guys like Jon and -e-!

I'm a full-figured woman and damned proud of it! And my husband feels the same as you guys do...he hates those *toothpick* supermodels! He says that it must not be any fun to make love to with a woman, when you are afraid that she might break if you get too excited! LOL!!!
