This laptop bytes
Well knock on motherboard, I'm on my laptop again right now...and I've taped the power cord to the back to make sure it tries to stay that way. We were up 'til almost 5 a.m. transferring as much as we could off my HD to Todd's. :-\

Todd called Dell tech support, and the prices quoted were $600 here, $200 there. Not good. In their infinite wisdom, they recommended we just purchase a new system from them. Ya' think? NOT! The Inspiron series has known problems with the batteries and power supplies -- and my battery died earlier this week. I had 3 replaced under warranty for the same issue, and they have been recalled...BUT...b/c I had the original replaced (and Dell sent refurbished ones each time), they WON'T honor the recall in my instance. I'd need a tracking number on the battery that the ones they sent as replacements earlier don't have. Ass clowns. And reading their tech support forums, once the AC power starts to go, your machine is pretty much toast.

This is so not in our budget right now! We just bought a house for crimeny's sake. But we went back to the ol' checkbook drawing board and I think we're going to try to swing it somehow. There are just days I'm not capable of sitting at his PC, and this thing is pretty much my life. But couldn't the stupid thing have waited at least a few more months after Christmas? I want to punch that "Dude, you're getting a Dell" kid in the face! In 18 months, besides all of the power problems, the keyboard has fried twice on this. And reading their forums, makes me wonder why we were ever stupid enough to be lured in by them. Oh yeah, cheap prices. Our bad. So note to you...if you're considering a Dell laptop...read their tech support forums first! Buyer beware!

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

That really, really stinks, Robyn. I'm sorry you are having to go through all of this.

Mike has a Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop. After reading what you had to say, I realize that the only reason it still works is that he doesn't use it very much...he mostly uses his computer at work, and I have my own desktop PC.

He did, however, have a problem when he tried to run a floppy disk...it didn't work! (what can I say, my guy likes his ancient software!)

But anyway...I hope you can work something out, to get a new, non-Dell laptop...I know how hard you work on your sites, and how much you love it, and the many people who enjoy your work should also not be deprived.

~~~sending good vibes Robyn's way~~~
Jason has 2 or 3 Dell laptops and has had problems with all of them.
that really bites, babe. sorry to hear it. for whatever it's worth, you should cruise through epinions.com before you make your next purchase. also ... FWIW ... I have a sony vaio laptop and it rules ... it probably cost a smidge more than a dell would have, but on the upside, in ten+ years I have *never* had a problem with any piece of sony technology ... stereo components, car audio, walkman, camera, other computers, TV, PS, PS2, speakers, whatever ... if it's got wires, I always try to buy a sony model first. they never break on me ...
I so lust over anything with SONY on it. Unfortunately I just don't see it being in the budget right now. We try to buy SONY whenever possible, but in order to afford the label at this point, we'd need a few months more to save up I'm afraid. I just don't want to be without that long considering my addiction. ;-) One of the main features we're looking into now is warranty though (and we've been on epinions for the last hour or so as we browse)! Dell's warranty sucks. Especially being penalized for having the battery replaced while under it!
You already know my warning about Macs. ;) I can say I was able to delay the inevitable for a few months by duct-taping the back of the lid to the screen when I just couldn't afford to take the !*#@$& thing in to be repaired anymore, so hopefully the power cord fix will have a similar result for you.
Awww, what a terrible shame! Actually, this really sucks! For criminey out loud, I wish I could just say it already... but I think you have the idea. I understand what your saying though, you need a computer and can't wait for months until you can afford the one that you really want, so basically you settle.
We really like Sony stuff, too... but not all of it works or works for as long as it should.
Totally sucks about the Dell laptop. I've got a Dell PC... brand new P4. Pray it holds up better than the laptop.
Hang in there, girl!
Meryl, for the most part we've only heard good things about their desktops. It's the laptops we're starting to find out fall apart when the warranty goes out. *crossing fingers for you*
Meryl, I'm one with a newish Dell PC with a P4 and absolutely love it! I've not had a single glitch or hick with this computer. I can run several programs at once and it can keep up with me. You're in for a treat.
Drag.. I have no experience with Dell's laptops, but here are some things I have learned..
IBM 600X's are totally decent, and you can get them pretty cheap on Ebay. We have several at work.
Stay away from Compaq's laptops, 1200-1700 series. They are cheap plastic trash.
If you want to get a really good laptop, go for either the IBM T20, T21, or the HP OmniBook XE3. I have used all of those at work and lust activly after them.
But, of course, I am a geek that way...
Ugh, that just bites! Much sorryness to you!!!! My sister has an HP laptop, and has been pretty happy with it. Someday, I'm gonna have a laptop. But not yet! I'm too attached to the features of desktops; like being able to have a huge hard drive for not as much moolah as a laptop would be... and 256 Ram.... and now a CD burner :giggle: Yes, I'm attached ;)
That Really,Really Stinks. I Pity Thine. I wanna get a laptop bad. i would go to www.overstock.com . The prices are good there but some of them dont have the greatest hardware but you can get one for 1000$ and downwards. Good luck with your laptop,and pray that i get one thats not like yours.
