You'll shut me down with a push of your button
[art*o*mat] "Art*o*mat machines are retired cigarette vending machines that have been converted to vend art. Currently, there are 49 active machines in museums and various locations throughout the country. The experience of pulling the knob alone is quite a thrill, but you also walk away with an original work of art. Ker-plunk! What an easy way to become an art collector." For more visit the Art*o*mat website.

Shame there's not any in Florida yet! (Link via Sensible Erection.)

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

I think it's gone now, but there was such a device in the Marshall Center Student Union at USF for many years...when you walked in the front doors (across from the Special Events Center) it was to your right, along the left hand side of the wall past the information booth. It was an old cigarette machine that you could purchase artwork done by USF students, profits went to blah blah blah...I never bought any of the stuff (mostly because I never had any cash) but it was always fun to look at.

These are fantastic! I saw the same kind of deal when I was in Montreal. I think I'd be broke if there was one anywhere near me, I'd buy stuff every day.

Coincidentally, I submitted some mini art books to those vending machines. Somewhere in the world someone vended for my books or they're still sitting in a machine somewhere!

Aren't those just the coolest things? They were up for a SXSW website award this year. Too cool! Now I want to get one of Nicole's books from one of them!
