Hulk smash!
Is anyone else as bugged by the CGI animation in the Hulk trailers as I am? It just looks so fake, cheap and cartoonish. I was really excited when the first trailer came out with Spider-Man last year (which didn't show the Hulk character yet), but the more new ones they release on TV now with him, the more annoyed I get. Maybe I'll change my mind if I read a few good reviews once it's released, but I'm no longer dying to see it on opening day -- and that's really disappointing!

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

I agree... I have been telling my wife that I'm excited to see the movie because it's another film adaptation of a good comic but the CGI just bothers me. I mean look at Golem, he doesn't look nearly as fake as the Hulk. Of course I know that they aren't just going to paint a really big guy green like the show but I think they could have taken out some of the cartoon feel of the animation. I still plan on seeing it on Friday, I just hope I won't be disappointed.

I read some advance reviews last week (can't remember where now), and they were pretty bad. That's a shame. I was really looking forward to this one.

Same here, Robyn. I even took my Hulk skin down. ;)

yeah, E and I have mentioned the same thing - you'd sure think that they could have made him look more "real"... the commercials are pretty fake looking.

CGI my butt....I'm old school. They should have brought back Lou Ferrigno out of retirement...or whatever it is he is doing these days.

¤ ¤ credit: buddha | 06.17.03 at 03:19 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Yes, yes, yes!! We were just talking about that last night, how they've just ruined the whole thing by making it so fake. It sucks!

¤ ¤ credit: Laura | 06.17.03 at 03:20 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

It looks like Lou Ferrigno has a cameo as a security guard in The Hulk.

I've seen some trailers that look horrific, and some that look halfway decent, but I'm such an old school fan of Greenie that I've got to see this flick...which is more than I can say for T3...

¤ ¤ credit: Matt | 06.17.03 at 03:46 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Stan Lee's got a security guard cameo too...I guess it's true that any of his comics made from a Marvel comic book has to have a small part for him.

¤ ¤ credit: Matt | 06.17.03 at 03:50 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Yah, it bugs me, too.
The CGI must have gone to the lowest bidder.
It looks really crappy.
The Final Fantasy movie had better looking CGI.
They had to have cut some corners.
A damn shame.

I've been saying the same thing to Steven. He said he watched something about how green is the hardest color to make the person/animal/creature look real when using. Guess that has a lot to do with it. I'm sure we'll end up seeing it either way.

CG makes space battles and Disney flicks look amazing, but it's nowhere near advanced enough to make *people* look realistic (Look at The Matrix Reloaded).

Look how impressed we all were with Jar Jar Binks. And the Hulk is far superior to Jar Jar in quality of CG. I hate to geek out here, but nothing currently compares to physical models over computer graphics.

And I *want* to see T3 - the latest trailer looks good - the others were shite (and lets face it, T2 blew us out of the water effects wise, but was terrible writing. )

Ok, screw it, I wanna geek out; they're considering a LIVE ACTION Transformers movie. No cq here, baby!!! All guys in suits, stepping models of cities and bluscreened people running out of the way. All we need now is a certain green 'zilla to make an appearance and we've got film history!!!

Oh come on; The Transformers live action would SO rock!

It really bothers me as well. My husband doesn't seem to mind though. There was a discussion at work a while back about how he's supposed to look cartoonish or something. I'm not sure. I don't believe a human being could ever transform into that though.. isn't that the point?

¤ ¤ credit: lynda | 06.17.03 at 04:18 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

i've only seen one commercial, but it seemed almost spoofish to me. that he was transforming more like jim carrey in the mask.

¤ ¤ credit: tanya | 06.17.03 at 04:25 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

ooo. i dunno. i just watched the trailer at the official site, and i thought it looked cooool. maybe that's because it's in a tiny quicktime window tho...

¤ ¤ credit: tanya | 06.17.03 at 04:33 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

It bugs, but I still want to see it.

¤ ¤ credit: Alteredboy | 06.17.03 at 04:58 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I have a theory that he looks so fake because we can't conceptualize a huge green guy as looking *real*. You know what I mean? No?

Um, I still want to see it.

¤ ¤ credit: Darling Girl | 06.17.03 at 05:16 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Feel the same way here, Robyn.

¤ ¤ credit: Ashley | 06.17.03 at 05:37 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

We were really looking forward to seeing the movie, but are not sure anymore. The CGI is really sucky. Worried that I'd be paying more attention to it then the actual story/movie.

¤ ¤ credit: munin | 06.17.03 at 05:56 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I'm getting so tired of movie and t.v. studios taking my favorite childhood shows and ruining them in their effort to be "slick." The Hulk is just the latest in a long string. Remember "The Flintstones"?

¤ ¤ credit: Venomous Kate | 06.17.03 at 06:27 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

How about a live action version of The Thunderbirds? Happening right now. Not even in Super-marianation!!

¤ ¤ credit: Quinn MacDonald | 06.17.03 at 07:10 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

cgi hulk, bad.

¤ ¤ credit: mikey | 06.18.03 at 12:47 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Hulk no smash as good when Hulk in CGI. HULK MAAAAD!

:)

I'll still see it...besides the fact that it's the Hulk movie, and it's got Jen Connelly, and it's got Nick Nolte, and it's directed by Ang Lee...well, there isn't anything besides that I guess.

I'll get around to T3 sometime, and I'm sure the effects will be quite well done, but I've yet to see a trailer that makes the "plot" seem the least bit compelling.

A few points to add here from my own personal CGI technical director ...

1. PLEASE do not ever judge any movie with CG by the trailers ... those scenes are generally done so early on in the process that they often will not even look the same in the film (the same scenes) It has been reported that CG elements have been tweaked as recently as 3 weeks ago in certain scenes. From what I've been told, some of the elements of HULK himself are quite amazing in technical terms.

2. (and he was very adamant about this)
This HULK is based on the earlier comics from the 1960's. All of the actions are based upon what he was written to be capable of in the comics -- leaping miles, lifting certain objects, growing in spurts ... etc. This is totally a comic based movie having VIRTUALLY NOTHING to do with the television show (excepting Lou's cameo)

3. Absolutely, positively do not compare this with something like Spiderman. There isn't much happy happy joy joy technicolor in the Hulk, it is very dark (let me say that again ... very dark) and if you go in expecting a delightful summer romp ... you will be gravely disappointed. For fans of the Hulk comics ... it will be exactly what you want ... for everyone else, it likely will not be what you are expecting. Best bet ... see it with an open mind.

But that's just one person's opinion ... it could be wrong ...

I read some reviews on it and they were pretty good. I haven't read anything bad yet.

I think that Hulk is gonna be awesome. Even though he's all CGI its going to be a good movie. Theres no way they could have done the movie any other way. They can't paint up a guy and make him do all the things that Hulk from the comics could do.

¤ ¤ credit: Douglas | 06.18.03 at 08:33 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

According to an Entertainment Weekly interview with Ang Lee, the Hulk is exposed to the audience gradually, so that by the time he is revealed in full light, you have accepted him as a true character.

Of course, the studio's promotions team went and blew that all to crap with the trailer, which is rumored to have included pre-render shots as well.

I was complaining about the same thing just the other day. I doubt I'll even see it now.

¤ ¤ credit: Kat | 06.18.03 at 11:39 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

I've also heard that some of the shots in the trailer were from the workprint (which is in rampid distribution over the net) ... so yeah. I think because it's such an enterprise (games, figures, etc,) that they had to start promotion WAY far ahead of the actual production schedule.
If anything I think the studio (which duh ... it's Universal) is going to take the brunt of the blame ... I hope. We shall see soon enough.

Nothing could be worse than Lou Ferigno in his green slippers running around beating up rednecks.

That's pretty much what I've been thinking every time I see those previews. If the dang pod racers or even my Uncle Woody's toup can pass as realistic, why can't something as simple as the Hulk cut it?
I can't believe I have an Uncle Woody, I really can't. But I do. What a name.

These comments may have actually changed my mind...I was in the "sucky CGI" camp, but maybe I will go see the movie after all. I'm willing to give it a chance.

The only person that spoke sence out of all of you, was Kitty. This is a movie based on a Comic book character. Kitty basically explained as to Why the Hulk doesn't look "Real" in the trailers. The Incredible Hulk series from the 80's couldn't have done what is beign done today, that wasn't the real Hulk. The Hulks supposed to be, That big, That huge. Most of you got your mind set on Lou as the Hulk.. Answer me this, Have Any of you at all Ever read an Incredible Hulk comic book??.....

¤ ¤ credit: Some guy | 06.19.03 at 05:03 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Answer me this...can you correctly spell sense before lecturing us all on not having any? (And for the record, my husband's comic collection would rival that of most comic stores.)
