Dancin' in the streets
It's amazing how different towns handle sporting milestones. I guess everyone expects the Oakland fans to riot -- win or lose. By contrast, other than a trash can fire and auto-pedestrian accident last weekend, for the most part things were very tame here in Tampa Bay when we clinched the NFC title. Even at a last-minute gathering of 25,000+ fans. The "riot police" at that event consisted of four men on horseback. From all local media accounts, Tampa Bay was very orderly in their celebrations tonight as well. Dale Mabry was bumper-to-bumper and Ybor was packed, but arrests were at a minimum. When OU won their national title in 2000-01, you didn't see our fans burning cars in the streets of Norman either.

I guess I've really never understood that mindset. I've never been a fan of a team where rioting was considered the "norm" (even if done by a fringe-group and looked down upon by other fans), or even something that was expected and to be braced for. Thank goodness. Your team loses? Well life goes on, and there's always next season. And if it wins -- well let's just say we all tossed back more than a few tonight in this town. But the real celebration will be done in the right way, at the right place, tomorrow night. CONGRATS BUCS!

UPDATE: Well here you go -- this is how we celebrate in Tampa. TBO.com mentions this:

"Meanwhile, in Ybor City revelers began pouring into the popular nightclub district.....At least one woman was arrested for baring her breasts, but most were described as happy fans."

And somewhat related, Tampa Bay Online also has a Super Bowl Weblog.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Well, there were those hooligans that go to U of Tampa that tore down the goalpost at the UT field (Pippin Rood?) and marched down Kennedy with it. I'm sure they took it back though.

Maybe that's why we "don't deserve it"...because our riot-fu is weak.

Oh I heard about that -- that cracked my shit up! Visions of the ESPN GameDay commercial with Corso driving the Cushman into the Yugo came to mind...

LOL...Jody was watching the post game show on channel 10 and whoever it was reporting from Ybor kept holding the camera over the balcony. At one point she remarked that if they kept that up someone would eventually flash the camera.
Whoever it was that got arrested must have flashed the wrong cop.

Tampa fans were in shock because they didn't expect to win, that's why ... hee hee. *wink*

There's a U of Tampa?

I'm not big into football, but that blog is cool. Thanks! :)

OK, so am I the only one that thinks Jon Gruden is hot?

Maybe I'm just weird. Dunno. Been accused of it before. ;-)

There has to be something wrong with a country where women flashing their breasts are arrested.

What about the individuals jumping on people's cars, as reported by the St. Pete Times?

Dale Mabry Highway -- scene of many a Bucs' defeat in years gone by -- was bumper-to-bumper, awash in jubilation and smoke from fireworks. People jumped on cars and a television news truck. A man in the median waved a Bucs flag, his boxer shorts pulled down, one of several fans who ran around naked.

Harmless fun, nonetheless...

For the first time I'm embarrased to say I live around Oakland :(

It was a horrible place to live in last night so very sad.

im proud of Tampa Bay. We did the celebrating right. With THAT many people out there, the town did a GREAT job of keeping it together! :)

I won't say Husker fans aren't bad, because we do have that little ritual of trying to take down the goal post at major games, but after winning the national chamionship, we had tons of people gathering down at a major intersection here in Omaha, and for the most part, they weren't too bad. I think a horse got punched once. And some people climbed some big billboard signs...but other than that, no rioting or anything.

(When we lose, we're too depressed to riot!!)

Hooray for Tampa~~

Was a great game. A lot of people said it wasn't interesting because it was a blowout for 95% of the game, but hey...if your team is doing the ass-kicking, it was a great game! :)

Was glad to see the Bucs finally get over the hump and bring the trophy home. Now, send Shaun King to Chicago for me, and I'll start to be a happy man.

It was the same when the Packers won the Superbowl a few years back and the national media couldn't understand why nobody rioted, looted, or started bonfires in the streets (and we probably have the best excuse for starting bonfires in the streets in January *g*). I remember a lot of people just running around and being really giddy and screaming. No flashing, though. It's just too cold up here. ;-)

Congrats to your team on winning the Super Bowl!

KB, Dale Mabry is the road that runs in front of the stadium. People went there to try to get into the stadium and were turned away. There was a single news truck there and the newswoman was inviting the celebrants to gather around. Many people did actually park their cars right in the median and climbed on top of them to shout GO BUCS! at others passing by on either side. There was much flag waving and cheering in and by the streets around the stadium. The police just asked the people to take it to Ybor City from what I understand. (Ybor City streets are regularly blocked off and provides a much safer area for people to celebrate)

I was cheering for Tampa the entire time. Yay! I'm so glad they beat Oakland. San Diegans don't generally like Raiders (sorry gnome-girl).

Now you understand why we Chargers and Broncos fans dislike the Raiders so much - no class what so ever. Did Broncos fans riot after they lost one of their 15 Super Bowls? Nope, just have a few more beers and go skiing the next day and all is better. Anyway, congrats to the Bucs and all their fans!
And Robyn, speaking of women bearing breasts on the streets of Tampa, when does their Mardi Gras fun start up? I must plan my sked accordingly.

Cap'nSwanky, I lived in Denver when they won their last superbowl, and as I recall, the fans got QUITE rowdy.

i feel your pain, gnome-girl....i live near oakland also. i made damn sure i was home well before the game was over.
