And this one time...at band camp...
OU is enjoying a bye week this weekend, so we're stuck watching other games around the country. The remote has landed on the PSU/OSU game for the moment, so I thought it would be fun to play "pick the worst school band uniform". In today's head-to-head competition we're pitting the Ohio State University Marching Band against the University of Texas Longhorn Band. It's a tough call when you compare OSU's "I wanna be a Canadian, eh" berets and "Are you a pothead Fauker" arm patches -- to the cheap, burnt orange homemade Halloween costume-esque UT uniforms, complete with fringe and rick-rack. You make the call -- which is worse:

And yes, I do get reeeeeeally bored when I'm not feeling well.

UPDATE: After reading VASpider's comment, I thought I'd throw the PRIDE OF OKLAHOMA uniforms into the mix. Although they are in desperate need of a university logo overhaul, side-by-side with the 'whorns, I think we all know which band wins (OU vs. texas - bands, OU vs. texas - majors, OU vs. texas - twirlers). Boomer Sooner!

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Ugh.

Well, being the tremendous band geek that I am, I can tell you that both bands are at least 15 years out of date. (Yes, marching bands have styles and fads and fashion trends, too. ;p) The Texas band's look is late 1970's, while the OSU band's look is mid-80's.

Friggin' crossbelts. I hate those things.

Yep. OU has definitely updated their uniforms within at least the last ten years (which, for a marching band, esp. a college one, is a good thing, and is about as close to 'current' as one can ask).

I can't comment on majorette uniforms, though, because our school never used majorettes. Colorguard, yes, but... we were a competition band, which is a whole other animal where that's concerned.

I'm digging on the OU Drum Major's uniform. Simple and pseudo-military band uniforms = good, as far as I'm concerned. Anything that's obviously gimmicked = bad bad bad. It looks dated by the time you've finished ordering it!

I think one of the best things about the OU Drum Major is when they lead the band on the field. They wear the big Q-tip white fluffy hat, and "march" with their body bent backwards (tip of the hat barely scraping the ground) all the way to the 50-yard line. I couldn't even pull that off in my limber, cheerleading days. It wow's me every time! There's a reason they're called the "Pride of Oklahoma" though. They're good. Damn good. The photos are just a start to back that up...

Ohio or texas? You sure did make the choices hard. The OSU band did look at lot more up-to-date than the longhorns. And as an Okie we're supposed to hate everything about longhorns, so I've voted them worst. OU beats them all hands down! Boomer Sooner!

I ran into many an OU band member after the Cotton Bowl this year. They sounded, looked, and acted top notch! Although I was bummed at the outcome I did enjoy myself. Whoo Pig!

Allow me to clarify...The 2002 SBC Cotton Bowl Classic. Where Arkansas (Whooo Pig Sooie!!) lost to OU.

I've always thought that the Texas uniforms were hideous! I think they were wearing the same ones back in 1989 when I was in college! *shiver* However, I would like to be a Texas twirler when I grow up - I am all about those chaps!

Every time I see chaps I think of Pauley Shore in "The Son In-Law"! Heh.

Oh I can see it now - "The Band Uniform Project" ... submit photos of yourself in the worst band uniforms ever (whoever does it just give me credit for the idea).

And yes, I have a photo of me in one somewhere...

I must say that Corey Wilson (the OU drum major in your pictures) certainly helps the look of the uniform. OU's band uniforms are new. They were bought the year I was a freshman there. 98-99.

Can majorettes get a scholarship for twirlling a baton? My mother says that you cannot get a scholarship for twirlling a baton but I disagree with her? Is there a possible way that majorettes can go to juliard for twirlling a baton?

Zac--

Being a member of said Troy State Sound of the South, I personally like our uniforms. Having said that, that Arkansas game was the most hideous, miserable game I've ever had to attend. (And we still make fun of Chuck for having his mouth wide open in that picture.)

I think FAMU's uniforms are straight out of the seventies, but they're still a very good band. I don't particularly care for Nebraska's uniforms, either.
