How quick the sun can drop away
I like to think of my college days (1991-95) as "the good ol' days" of music. Grunge was in its prime. Britney was still in grade school. New Kids, Mr. Jackson and hair bands had been banished from the airwaves. But ten years ago this week I was about to start my sophomore year at OU. It would be another eight weeks until I met Todd for the first time. And looking at the Billboard charts for August 22, 1992 -- Billy Ray Cyrus was at number one. Number freakin' one. Eeep. Of course, Pearl Jam's "Ten" was close behind him. But Kris Kross, Mariah Carey, and Garth Brooks were also keeping them company in the top 10. It was the best of times...it was the worst of times...I guess. It's funny what the mind chooses to remember.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Kriss Kross?! Billy Ray?! Oh, man. I, too, had blocked out the mindless and chosen to remember the grunge... Defense mechanisms can be a good thing! ;-)

I remember those days... When you could get away with wearing old flannel shirts and ratty longjohn tops cause Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain did. When Docs were cool *and* cheap. Also, round about the time when baggy butt pants became a fashion statement. Good times, bad times...

I'm not quite sure what it says about me now that I haven't been able to get Enrique Iglesias' "Escape" out of my head today...

Did you also notice that the Billy Ray song was like only 3 chords?

I really hated that song.

Isn't it always the way of memory to remember only what we want to remember? I consider the early 1980s the prime time of music, but were I to go back and check out the charts, I know there were plenty of songs polluting the airwaves that I was quick to switch channels on. But that's what makes memory great, in a way; it keeps us from retaining all the bad things we'd rather not think about.
