I'd like to buy a clue for $200, Alex
Below is first-draft a copy of the Democratic gubernatorial primary ballot in Florida from the Orlando Sentinel. We did it again. Tell me if this would have confused you... Maybe it's just because I'm a natural blonde, but it sure did me. Notice the circled part says "Vote for One Pair". Only you weren't supposed to select two names on the ballots. You were only supposed to select one. Selecting two would have resulted in a voided ballot. The "pair" part referred to the candidate's choice for lieutenant governor. Only the candidates haven't selected their running mates yet, so the text under the candidate's name read "Not Yet Designated". I'm sorry, but as if the 2000 ballots weren't confusing enough to some -- someone somewhere had to know that these were even more so!

Thank goodness Judge Nikki Clark agreed. Today she just gave her blessing to a plan which will remove one word from the ballot instructions. Ballots will now read "Vote for One" rather than "Vote for One Pair". (Read more at the Orlando Sentinel. This post at "Painfully Cool" reminded me of this story.)

UPDATE: If you didn't think Florida was fucked up enough 'til now, check out this link found over at Seki's. As someone who hopes with every fiber in her being to be able to adopt one day, it just makes me want to cry. Andrea has added an excellent response as well.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Oh yeah, that was confusing. After all the fuss from the last big election, you would think a 1st grader would be able figure out how vote this time around. Here it seems you need a Masters Degree and in Spanish.

Three cheers for the judge with common sense!

Is it all the retired people down there affecting the thinking of everyone else? Is it the water? I suggest y'all write Jeb and start an investigation. This is just so not right.

I'm tellin' ya'...it's that vast right-wing conspiracy...

I'm not a natural blonde, that wasn't exactly what'd I'd call clear cut.

And not to be insanely picky, but I'm Hispanic, so this totally stuck out. "Vote por uno par" is grammatically incorrect. It should be "por UN par". Wouldn't you think before printing up something that will be distributed to thousands of people you would at least ATTEMPT to have a native speaker proofread a couple lines? *sheesh* :)

Jenni, I would have never caught that -- but yes, you would think so! Especially since the governor's own wife is Hispanic!

who the fuck came up with that adoption law in the first place? and how the fuck did it pass?!?!?!?

No apologies needed. I consider myself an Oklahoman living in Florida. I'm just as angry and bewildered as everyone else.

That is the weirdest adoption law I've ever heard of. =(

It's a misleading phrase but it's only so outrageously misleading because of that particular ballot which the drafters couldn't be expected to predict (whatever their personal politics turn out to be, though I'll giggle a little if they're democrats).

The really stupid part is the not designating a running mate yet. I like to know what and who I'm voting for before I go in the booth, but even if I don't, I expect to know who I've voted for when I walk out. Apparently that's too much to ask if you're a democrat in Florida though.

Brown hair here, and although I may have guessed correctly and only chosen one, I shouldn't have to guess when filling in a ballot. I hope I never have to vote in Florida!

if that balot confuses someone they shouldn't be allowed to vote. simple really.
