Not even for free...
"Spirit Airlines Tuesday announced its plans for commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, saying it will offer free seats to all passengers on that day. The company’s chief executive, Jacob Schorr, called the 13,000 free seats a 'thank you' to the American public and the airline’s customers."

Sorry guys, but my feet will be firmly planted on the ground that day. I just couldn't possibly imagine flying on September 11th ever again. It's hard enough to come to terms with flying again period. (Read the full article at MSNBC.com.)

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

It's a nice idea, but I'd be as nervous as all hell, and it would feel weird. I agree with you.

It really is a nice idea, and if I had somewhere to go, I'd fly in a minute, even if it was Sep. 11, but the whole "to commemorate people dying from jetliners crashing into things, here's a free flight to wherever!"....

Like I said, I'm sure it was done with the best of intentions, and bravo to them in theory... but it REALLY brushes bad taste, no?

I have to agree. It would be weird, and almost doesn't seem right to fly on that day. I don't think I could do it.

Holla at that sista!!! You guys are going to have to carry my drunk/drugged ass off that plane.

I wouldn't mind flying for free but Spirit airlines doesn't fly into Atlanta. (sigh)

that's funny, i wanted to do it, but their server's down. i bet they got swamped. i'm going camping with the girlies that weekend, anyway...

Maybe the folks at Spirit figure "it's the thought that counts," but I agree with John. Seems to me they're mostly promoting themselves. If they'd said, 'hey, we'll donate all our Sept. 11 ticket revenues to the victims' families,' I would be more impressed. As far as airline safety-I've been a white-knuckler for 20 years, so naturally I am a confirmed non-flyer now and probably forever. And, if we can't even keep suspicious individuals from leaving this country, (i.e. the guy who fled to Egypt the other day), how in hell are we supposed to believe more Attas aren't still getting in? Ack.

I don't know, I've never been a big fan of flying to begin with. I will fly, only if I can't drive there, or I can't drive there in enough time. Although I'm a little too north of the border for this free flight offer, I still think I'd still drive. Imagine the security going on that day. It will be nuts.

I think Todd had the best idea regarding the 11th the other night. Suspend ALL U.S. flights that day. Most major airlines are cutting their schedules back or completely anyway according to the news.

Then send four empty planes with a rose on each seat across the country on the route they would have taken if not hijacked. No one profits, and it's the airline version of the military "missing man formation".

They wouldn't do it...but I thought it was a really good idea.

Well it is a nice gesture and that's a hell of a lot of revenue to miss out on. So...promoting theirselves or not, I don't mind at all. With the way the economy is and how airlines are taking it in the shorts, ESPECIALLY small airlines like Spirit, I think it's a hell of a thing to do. I love flying but I wont be doing it on that day. I have my own memorial planned.

Perhaps Todd is right, spending flights for a day would be a rather symbolic gesture and I vote for that.

Someone said to give the money to the survivors of the families but I don't vote for that. Some, most, are getting millions as it is now, not to mention insurance money and lawsuits. I'd rather see the families of servicemen and women get it for the sacrifices that their loved ones made. I'm sure what I said isn't very popular but it's how I feel.

you know, it's not so much about not flying on the 11th as it is how I'm just tired of everyone going on and on about it. jay said it -- we're not watching tv on the 11th. enough already. we're mourning as a country, yes, and every day I'm affected by the 11th -- in everything I do. I'm changed now. I don't need the airlines to reaffirm that.

That whole "marketing" and quite frankly that is what it is -- theme from Spirit Airlines or whoever they are rubs me the wrong way. I plan to reflect quietly on the lives that were lost. I think we have demonstrated as a country through our NATURAL actions our mourning and loss but to have a marketing "fly free" campaign...just doesn't work for me...I can't even fathom being on a plane September 11th....

As of 3:00 PDT, they were 90% full on their flights. Guess not everybody was as paranoid about flying on that day as you guys. And they even fly into LaGuardia.

Even though they are flying, it still seems to strange. I would much rather stay at home that day and hug love ones. Period.
