They say that breakin' up is hard to do
Looks like we've got ourselves quite the little "kick your sorry butt to the curb" CD going on... You might want to file this post away for future reference, as I'll be expanding the list as it grows. That way should you, or someone close to you, need a little pick-me-up -- you'll have tons of songs already gathered to download the night away, so you can crank up the "break up" songs whilst force-feeding ice cream and tequila!

  28. See comments for even more recommended songs...
* Disclaimer: The owner of tampatantrum.com does not personally recommend Ms. Carey's songs under any circumstance, and caution should be used if you choose to expose yourself - and others - to her music.

Now's your chance to add yours to the pile...keep 'em comin'!

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

OOOOH! I thought of another one: "Hold on" by Sarah McLachlan off of the Fumbling Towards Ecstacy CD.

¤ ¤ credit: Susan | 05.01.02 at 03:42 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Oooh, that is a good one!

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 05.01.02 at 03:49 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Enough of this mushy stuff, this is what needs to be on there:
Pantera - This Love

¤ ¤ credit: jesse | 05.01.02 at 09:00 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

How about the Bare Naked Ladies' song "Didn't mean to break your heart"?

¤ ¤ credit: Mike McBride | 05.01.02 at 10:12 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

ok, this is going to sound SO LAME so forgive me before you read further...but I thought I'd add Mariah Carey's "If It's Over" since I saw her sing it today on an old SNL show.

P.S. Mariah Carey disgusts me so why I like that song evades me...

¤ ¤ credit: Queen | 05.01.02 at 02:02 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Hag - Breeders
She's Not There - The Turtles
Girl Don't Tell Me - The Beach Boys
So Far - The Vincent Van Go Go

¤ ¤ credit: hoopty | 05.01.02 at 02:08 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I am frightened that hubby and I posted the same breakup song.

¤ ¤ credit: Angela | 05.01.02 at 03:07 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Susan, I love that song! That has definetly been played for most break ups.

Thought of another one;
Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine
[Notting hill soubdtrack]
lyrics

¤ ¤ credit: munin | 05.01.02 at 03:38 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Question *raises hand*

Would "Say Goodbye" by Dave Matthews Band Count?

¤ ¤ credit: John | 05.01.02 at 09:55 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

obviously -- breakup song - greg kihn band (my daughter says i'm stuck in the 80's)

¤ ¤ credit: kd | 05.02.02 at 03:48 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Is the rule of a breakup CD that all of the songs have to be depressing? What about the periods of anger or getting over the person?

These Boots Were Made for Walking - Nancy Sinatra
I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
On My Own - Peach Union

¤ ¤ credit: srah | 05.02.02 at 10:06 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

maybe i am a little more "hateful" during a bad breakup:

"used to love her" - guns 'n rose
"everthing about you" - ugly kid joe.

¤ ¤ credit: J2 | 05.02.02 at 01:11 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I have two that are on the sad side: Every Little Thing by Raul Malo and Not Pretty Enough by Kasey Chambers.

¤ ¤ credit: geekgrrl | 05.02.02 at 04:31 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

You can't have a break up cd without Ani DiFranco's "Untouchable Face" on it. I'm going to paste the lyrics here....

think i'm going for a walk now
i feel a little unsteady
i don't want noone to follow me
except maybe you

i could make you happy, you know
if you weren't already
i could do a lot of things
and i do

tell you the truth i prefer the worst of you
too bad you had to have a better half
she's not really my type
but i think you two are forever
and i hate to say it but you're perfect together

so fuck you
and your untouchable face
fuck you
for existing in the first place
and who am i
that i should be vying for your touch
who am i
bet you can't even tell me that much

2:30 in the morning
my gas tank will be empty soon
neon sign on the horizon
rubbing elbows with the moon
safe haven of the sleepless
where the deep fryer's always on
radio is counting down the top 20 country songs

out on the porch the fly strip is
waving like a flag in the wind
you know i really don't look forward
to seeing you again soon.

you look like a photograph of yourself
taken from far far away
i won't know what to do
i won't know what to say

so fuck you...

see you and i'm so perplexed
what was i thinking
what will i think of next
where can i hide
in the back room there's a lamp
that hangs over the pool table
and when the fan is on it swings
gently side to side
there's a changing constellation
of balls as we are playing
i see orion and say nothing
the only thing i can think of saying

is fuck you...

I could probably list 38434892 ani songs that fit this attitude but this one says it best in a "mainstream" way

¤ ¤ credit: Amytart | 05.03.02 at 11:21 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Definitely Tori Amos' "Putting the Damage On" and/or "Northern Lad."

No. I'm insane. Scratch that. She's got a lot of really good ones (Boys for Pele is one huge breakup album) but...

"China." Duh. Man.

China all the way to New York
I can feel the distance getting close
You're right next to me
But I need an airplane
I can feel the DISTANCE as you breathe

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great WALL around you
In your eyes I saw a future together
You just look away in the distance

China decorates our table
Funny how the CRACKS don't seem to show
Pour the wine dear
You say we'll take a holiday
But we never can agree on where to go

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great WALL around you
In your eyes I saw a future together
You just look away in the distance

China all the way to New York
Maybe you got lost in MEXICO
You're right next to me
I think that you can hear me
Funny how the distance learns to grow

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great WALL around you
I can feel the distance
I can feel the distance
I can feel the distance getting close

Oh. And. D'oh. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones: "Pictures to Prove It."

¤ ¤ credit: VASpider | 05.03.02 at 01:28 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

breakup song to shove you even deeper in the dumps - "pictures of you" - the cure.

¤ ¤ credit: J2 | 05.03.02 at 06:35 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Pretty impressive list. Since you are the queen of music could you suggest some very sappy, make-grandma-cry background music for a video I'm making from pictures of my son from day 1 to the 5 year old birthday party? I came up with "what a wonderful world" but that is it...you got ideas???

¤ ¤ credit: JE | 05.09.02 at 09:18 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

One by U2
and
The Washing of the Water by Peter Gabriel

Both have a place on my own compilation cd. Or heck, just go look at my own 10 year anniversary blog of *sigh* my soul mate. Wherever he is...

¤ ¤ credit: jana | 05.20.02 at 12:29 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

i'll add:

Go West - King of Wishful Thinking
"I'll get over you, I know I will
You made a hole in my heart
But I tell myself I'm over you
Cuz I'm the king of wishful thinking
"

AFI - Cruise Control
"I don't wanna fuck you
Don't wanna fuck you
I don't wanna fuck you
So FUCK YOU!
"

Motley Crue - Don't Go Away Mad
"Girl, don't go away mad
Please, just go away
"

does this give me the record for lastest comment from the original post date?

I'm going through a break up and about the only song I can stand is "Pushing Me Away" by Linkin Park.....

"I've lied, to you
the same way that i always do
this is, the last smile
that i'll fake for the sake of being with you

Everything falls apart,
even people who never frown
eventually break down. . ."

What do you think????

¤ ¤ credit: Jenn | 08.04.02 at 07:25 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I'm not really sure why.. but for some sick, sad reason, the song "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls gets me through my break ups..

Think what you may..

Just started making a breakup CD for a good friend of mine (his ex is a royal bitch and he's better off she's gone).

Am loving "She Hates Me" by Puddle of Mudd.

She fucking hates me....
Nananana

Doesn't get any clearer than that, man.

i want the last word.

so, more break-up songs, huh. how about:
Roxette - It Must Have Been Love (but it's over now)
Cliff Richard - Devil Woman
Geto Boys - Gangsta of Love

ok, i'm reachin here. i told ya, i want the last word.

¤ ¤ credit: mikey | 10.07.02 at 04:37 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor is not about a failed relationship. its about breast cancer.

¤ ¤ credit: Ruthie | 10.07.02 at 11:28 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Well, this might reach a little deep for ordinary breakups, but after four years with him it works for me:

A Perfect Circle- "The Hollow" (Mer de Noms)

¤ ¤ credit: Nora | 10.30.02 at 04:39 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

i think that most tragic break up song is "You were mine," by the Dixie Chicks. it is so sad. ^_^ also, "Might have been her," by switchfoot is a good break up song. it's about a guy who thought he would spend his life with one person but things change. I hope you guys look for this song because it is awesome. it is sad but the beat is really fast so it is fun to listen to, too.

¤ ¤ credit: Serena | 11.05.02 at 10:04 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

"She hates me" - Puddle of Mudd. It's the best song for when a guy is most frustrated because we know that all girls are evil. Another good one to consider to "Pretty Girl" - Sugarcult. It just speaks volumes about relationships.

¤ ¤ credit: rhett | 11.10.02 at 11:22 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

If it was possible to have an I.V. drip with a good song in the bag, i'd choose "Last Goodbye" by Jeff Buckley. Now, run and go download this, or even better, support his legacy and buy the freakin album.

¤ ¤ credit: Tabatha | 11.18.02 at 12:01 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

what are the words to she fucking hates me, is it living in a womans life or one big lie

¤ ¤ credit: angie | 11.21.02 at 06:55 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Korn - thoughtlesnes
white stripes - dead leaves and dirty ground
filter - where do we go from here
Ben Folds - song for the dumped
dashboard confessional - screaming infidelities
default - deny

I had to add one "Don't Break My Heart" by UB40.
Where are the roses and whispered sighs?
Where are the compliments and dreamy nights?
Sappy, I know, but it worked for me...

¤ ¤ credit: EC | 12.23.02 at 03:04 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Here's a new one for this list -- "It's Over" by UB40.

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 12.31.02 at 05:38 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

what about something a little heavier...used to know her by veruca salt.

¤ ¤ credit: monica | 01.26.03 at 10:59 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

ohhhhh!!! i forgot all about veruca salt. you have to listen to break up song. :)

If You want punk rock there's always there's the break up song by american hifi. I like Cake's version of I will Survive. I love techno music so jam your sorrows out to some Daniel Beddfield's I Gotta Get Through This!!!!! If you like country try Leann Rimes' Life Goes On. Rock out to some Marvelous 3 with their some entitled Get Over. And then there's No Doubt's Ex Girlfriend. Then after you're done, go out and rock the town and catch the eyes of as many guys (or girls for the boys) as possible and revel in the fact that you're being envied and adored by all!!!!! :)

¤ ¤ credit: CiCi | 02.27.03 at 05:10 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

K, I've never been here b4, but I've been looking for some break-up songs, and i would just like to praise whoever recommended Tori Amos. Yeah, I'm a huge Ears-With-Feet (aka Tori Fan) and I myself have been playing Putting the Damage On for ohhh, let's see, about two weeks straight. Yeah, Break-ups suck. But Tori helps me thorugh it, and anyone want a great, "get-back-on-your-feet-and-be-stronger-than-that" song, Tori's got a ton, HOw about, Take to the Sky and Spark. . . Yes, Boys for Pele has been my favorite lately, as I just got through a break-up, but here's some other good songs:

Tori Amos: 1000 oceans, Cool on Your Island, Cooling

Natalie Imbruglia: Torn

Faith Hill: Cry

And i can't believe no one's mentioned DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL!!! Try the WHOLE "places you have come to fear the most" albumn, plus the Sharp hint of new tears, for you to notice, and remember to breathe

yep, music rocks, break-ups suck

Breakdown -Mariah Carey feat. Bone Thugs.
"well i guess im trying to be nonchalant about it and im going to extremes to prove im fine without you but in reality im slowly losing my mind underneath the 'guise of smile gradually im dying inside."
"so what do you do when somebody you're so devoted to suddenly just stops loving you? and it seems like they havent got a clue of the pain of rejection thats putting you through. Do you cling to your pride and sing 'i will survive' or do you lash out and say 'how dare you leave this way?"

I stumbled upon this site thorugh a yahoo search. Nice list, one of my fav. break-up songs is "Freebird" by Lynard Skynard.....Just thought you might want to include it.

¤ ¤ credit: Aradia | 03.27.03 at 10:35 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Okay... I think the best song for a break-up is George Micheal's "Waiting for that day"!!!
It is amazing! You all have to check it out. Also "I grieve" By Peter Gabriel
"Baby Can I Hold You" By Tracy Chapman, "Do what You Have To Do" By Sarah Mclachlan
"Hey Jupiter (Dakota Version)" By Tori Amos
I Could probably go on forever so I'll stop here

"Never" or "Angel" by Amanda Perez are very sad songs that are good examples of real break-up situations.
Here is a verse from "Never":

I wish that I could turn back the hands of time
Cause if I wouldov'e knew your love was like this
Back then I wouldov'e made you mine, oh yeah
If I had to die a thousand times a day
I would do it for you, just to take
The pain that I have given you away
Cause I love you and I never want to

Here is a verse from "Angel":
It's been five months since you went away
Left without a word and nothing to say
When I was the one who gave you my heart and soul
But it wasn't good enough for you, no
So I asked God

These songs are really worth listening to.

"Sad Songs and Waltzes" - Cake
"Life in Mono" - Mono
"The Lover After Me" - Savage Garden

"Barely Breathing" - Duncan Sheik

Hey!

I'm trying to get over a break-up right now. It seems like every song on the radio is made just for me to cry over. I came across your website while doing a google search for "songs to survive a breakup". A lot of these songs are helpful! I need more songs like "I will survive". Songs that will help make me strong. Does anyone have any suggestions?!

Thanks all!

Try "Both Hands" by Ani Difranco. It is about realizing you have to move on when you tried just about everything to make a realationship work. It is a beautiful song

¤ ¤ credit: Kay | 04.24.03 at 12:55 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

"You Suck" by The Murmurs is great. Another that's more bittersweet than "kiss my ass" is "You Can Sleep While I Drive" by Melissa Etheridge.

I hate everything about you-Ugly Kid Joe {I think}

New Blue Champion by Everclear (off the Slow Motion Daydream CD) - This song fits my last girlfriend perfectly - too bad I didn't hear the song until after we broke up ;)

I don't want to hear you say you're sorry
I don't want to hear you say we can start all over again
I think you must think that I am stupid
Well I might be stupid for the rest of my life
But I'll never be stupid to you again
I just want it all to go away
Yeah, just go away
Yeah

I can see the light above me
I hear the sound of a brand new song
I don't want to hear your preaches
Cause I know what's right, I know what's wrong
I can see the light above me
I hear the sound of a brand new day
I'm not going to settle for less
I don't think things are going to change
I just want it all to go away

I don't want to hear about your damage
I don't want to hear you say that you think I'm damaged too
Because I know you know that the damage in me
Is from the horrible things you say and do
I know that the damage in me comes from the damage in you
I just want it all to go away

I can see the light above me
I hear the sound of a brand new song
I don't want to hear your preaches
Cause I know what's right, I know what's wrong
I can see the light above me
I hear the sound of a brand new day
I'm not going to settle for less
I don't think things are ever gonna to change
I just want it all to go away
Yeah, just go away
Yeah, I don't want to talk about it
I don't want to hear your lies
I don't want to talk about it
And I dont understand why you do not realize

I don't want to hear you say you're sorry
No, I don't want to hear you say we can start all over again
Whoa, I can see the light above me
I hear the sound of a brand new song
And I don't want to know your reasons
Cause I know what's right, I know what's wrong
I can see the light above me
I hear the sound of a brand new day
I can picture the lives without you
And I don't think things are ever gonna change
I just want it all to go away
I can see the light above me
The sound of a brand new song
I don't want to know your reasons
Cause I know what's right, I know what's wrong

Just visiting from a link, but had to add my favourite break up song. You're History by Shakespeare's Sister.

Well you made your bed
better lie in it - get back to sleep !

You should see me when you're not around
I'm a genius in this town
I'm a queen bee when the coast is clear
now I know I don't need you dear.
So wave your hand like a magic man and disappear!

You're history - like a beat up car -
No good for me - like an old film star -
You're history - that's what you are – na na na na.
You're history - you're history -
No good for me - no good for me -
You're history - you're history – na na na na na.

You should see me from your ivory tower
I'm the hero of the hour
I'm a close friend of destiny when you're not here to bother me.
Well you made your bed better lie in it get back to sleep !

You're history - like ancient Rome -
No good for me - like the Dead Sea Scrolls -
You're history - everybody knows - na na na na na.

You're history - you're history -
My enemy - my enemy -
You're history - you're history - na na na na na.

So get on your bike and take a hike right out of here !

You're history - you're history - No good for me - no good for me -
You're history - you're history - na na na na na.na

You're history - like a worn-out shoe -
My enemy - you're nothing new -
you're history - you're history -

You're history - like a beat up car -
No good for me - like an old film star -
You're history - you're history na na na na na.

You're history - sing it girl
let me hear you - You're history na na na na na.

You're history – mmm hmmm- my enemy
- bye-bye bye-bye -
You're history- so long ! -

"Take It On The Run" by REO Speedwagon
"Right Now" by Sum 41
"I Never Loved You Anyway" by The Corrs

we're living in a repetition,
content in the same old shtick again,
now the routines turning to contention,
like a production line going over and over roller coaster;

now i cannot speak,
i lost my voice,
speechless and redundant cause i love you is not enough,
im lost for words;

choreographed and lack of passion,
prototypes of what they were,
went full circle 'til im nauseous,
taken for granted now i waste it,
faked it,
ate it,
now i hate;

now i cannot speak,
i lost my voice,
speechless and redundant cause i love you is not enough,
im lost for words;

now i cannot speak,
i lost my voice,
speechless and redundant cause i love you is not enough,
im lost for words.

My favourite break up song of all time is Good bye to you - by Scandal

¤ ¤ credit: Cheryl | 06.26.03 at 09:53 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

I am going through a rough break up. Here are some songs that have helped alot!

Ani Difranco...Heartbreak even
PM Dawn...Die without you
Fiona Apple...paper bag
Morcheeba...Sao Paulo

¤ ¤ credit: jennyboo | 06.26.03 at 07:05 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

There were some pretty awesome suggestions here...I found this after searching for "breakup songs". I think about the only thing I have to add to the ever growing list right now is:

Try - Blue Rodeo. Give it a listen, it's my favorite.

¤ ¤ credit: Amber | 07.07.03 at 02:00 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I thought of another one...don't know how I could have forgotten it!

I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt...wow...that song pulls at my heart every time. It is pretty sad though, and more about wallowing in melancholy than self-righteous-pull-yourself-up stuff...

i am breaking up with the father of my 2 year old, these songs are awesome they have definitely helped! i really really like think twice by celine dion, im not a big celine fan but i love that one and my absolute FAVORITE is shut up and drive by shely wright:

shut up and drive, you don't know what your talkin about
he's not the one, you oughta know that by now,
you've got one of those hearts that keeps changing your mind,
your heart has a way, of makin you stay, just shut up and drive
don't look in the mirror, he might have that look in his eyes,
the look thats so strong, it strangles your will to survive,
he's mastered the art, of looking sincere,
his eyes have a way, of makin you stay, don't look in the mirror

(chorus)
I am the voice you never listen to, and i had to break your heart to make you see,
that he is the one that will be missing you,
and you'll only miss the man, that you wanted him to be,

turn the radio on, to drown out the sound of goodbye,
blink back the tears, show me you've still got your pride,
just get yourself lost, in a sad country song,
those guys when they play, know just what to say,
turn the radio on

(chorus)
I am the voice you never listen to, and i had to break your heart to make you see,
that he is the one that will be missing you,
and you'll only miss the man, that you wanted him to be,

shut up and drive, don't look in the mirror,
turn the radio on, and get out of here,
shut up and drive--------------------->

Nothing beats 'Hope it felt good' by Nikka Costa. Amazing..

¤ ¤ credit: annastazia | 07.16.03 at 12:59 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

A great song for those still going through the sad stage is "One Fine Day" by Sarah McClachlan. Be careful though, it will make you sad!

¤ ¤ credit: Brandi | 07.22.03 at 01:28 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

"Don't Wanna Try No More" - Frankie J.

"Stay Gone" - Jimmy Wayne

"Three Mississippi" - Terri Clark

"Cry" - Faith Hill

Ok, 3 out of 4 may be country songs but just listen to them. They really hit the spot and it's true that country really does speak the truth with a good beat included. Later.

Going through a bad break up and still in the sad stage. A few I didn't see on here were:

Clumbsy - Our lady peace
Cup of Coffee - Garbage
Stranded - Plumb

¤ ¤ credit: brookey | 07.30.03 at 06:55 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Forgot one more - Sometimes love ain't enough Patti Smyth and Don henley

Two important addtions:

1. "Cup of Coffee" - Garbage

Laugh it off
Let it go and
When you wake up

So yesterday, so yesterday
Haven't you heard that I'm gonna be ok

Dashboard Confessional - Standard Lines

because i have an AIM conversation that sounds eerily similar to the beginning of this song:

Which of the bold faced lies will we use?
I hope that your happy
you really deserve it
this will be best for us both in the end

But your taste still lingers on my lips like I just placed them upon yours
and I starve, i starve for you.
But this new diet's liquid
and dulling to the senses.
And it's crude but it will do.

So, which of the standard lines will we use?
I've been meaning to call you. I've just been so busy.
We'll catch up soon.
Let's make it a point to.

But your taste still lingers on my lips like I just placed them upon yours
and I starve, i starve for you.
But this new diet's liquid
and dulling to the senses.
And it's crude but it will do.

It will do, i hope it will do

"Dumb Girls" - Lucy Woodward
He broke my heart today
I don't know what to say
I can't feel a thing at all
I did not see it comin'
Now you just a man that got away
I look at the ground
And give the sky the middle finger
Something inside said
"Here's a day you should remember
So mark it on a wall"

I never believed it could happen to me
Something like this only happens to dumb girls
Taking themselves too seriously
I was so damn smart
I was the one girl
Who never believed it could happen to me
Something like this only happens to somebody else

I miss you so much
Can't stand it
You bring out the blonde in me
'Cause I'm still hanging on
Even though you done me wrong.
And I got the heart to forgive this
But I'd never let you know.
What kind of girl would put herself
In that postition?
yeah
To think that I could ever fight the system
And I got fooled again

I never believed it could happen to me
Something like this only happens to dumb girls
Taking themselves too seriously
I was so damn smart
I was the one girl
Who never believed it could happen to me
Something like this only happens to somebody else

I thought I was strong (I thought I was strong)
But I was just dreamin'
I can't believe it (can't believe it)
That nothing was wrong (nothing was wrong)
I thought I knew what was goin' on
But love was deceiving me (love was deceiving me)
Now I'm just a dumb girl
yeah
A dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb girl
That's what I am
yeah, yeah

I can't believe that it happened to me
Something like this only happens to dumb girls
Taking themselves too seriously
I was so damn smart, yeah
I was the one girl
Who never believed it could happen to me
Something like this only happens to somebody else

(only shit like this would happen to me)
Can't believe this shit could happen to me
yeah, yeah
'Cause something like this only happens to somebody else

I guess I'm just a dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb girl
That's what I am
Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb girl

"big big girl" by Emilia
I'm a big big girl
in a big big world
It's not a big big thing if you leave me
but I do do feel that
I too too will miss you much
miss you much...

I can see the first leaf falling
it's all yellow and nice
It's so very cold outside
like the way I'm feeling inside

I'm a big big girl
in a big big world
It's not a big big thing if you leave me
but I do do feel that
I too too will miss you much
miss you much...
Outside it's now raining
and tears are falling from my eyes
why did it have to happen
why did it all have to end

I'm a big big girl
in a big big world
It's not a big big thing if you leave me
but I do do feel that
I too too will miss you much
miss you much...

I have your arms around me ooooh like fire
but when I open my eyes
you're gone...

I'm a big big girl
in a big big world
It's not a big big thing if you leave me
but I do do feel that
I too too will miss you much
miss you much...

I'm a big big girl
in a big big world
It's not a big big thing if you leave me
but I do feel I will miss you much
miss you much...

Same Old Lang Syne
by Dan Fogelberg (1981)
This is not an angry song; can’t be categorized as being for dumper or dumpee. Just about a relationship that was once and is no more. Bittersweet.

“We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away.
Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain…”

I am looking for more breakup songs of this sort: a relationship where it’s time for the parties to realize it’s over, but it’s hard to muster the gonads to end it. Perhaps where the key elements are suffocation, habit… feel free to email me with suggestions.

Were You Born To Be An Asshole?

Well I was drivin' down I-95 the other night.
Somebody nearly cut me right off the road.
I decided it wasn't gonna do any good to get mad.
So I wrote a song about him instead.
It goes like this...

Were you born an asshole?
Or did you work at it your whole life?
Either way it worked out fine
'cause you're an asshole tonight.

Yes you're an A S S H O L E...
And don't you try to blame it on me
. You deserve all the credit.
You're an asshole tonight.

You were an asshole yesterday.
You're an asshole tonight.
And I've got a feelin'
you'll be an asshole the rest of your life. And I was talkin' to your mother
just the other night.
I told her I thought you were an asshole.
She said, "Yes. I think you're right."

And all your friends are assholes
'cause you've known them your whole life.
And somebody told me
you've got an asshole for a wife.

Were you born an asshole?
Or did you work at it your whole life?
Either way it worked out fine
'cause you're an aaaass...hole tonight.

All GREAT break up songs!!! Most of them I already have, but here's a few to add to ur list.
1)Low - Kelly Clarkson
2)Foolish - Ashanti
3)I'm gone - Cindy thompson
4)Get over yourself - Eve 6
5)whatever - Jessica Andrews

I'll write the lyrics of the next one, because no one has ever heard of it. It's called, I scream your name, by Mindy McCready.

So tired of walking 'round, dragging this ghost.
Can't escape the constant ache that wears on my bones.
It's too strong to rub it out, it's stuck like a stain.
A perminate reminder, driving me insaine.
I still see finality in that look on your face,
Still hide this bitterness, i can almost taste.
All the things i should have said, still echo inside.
I can't listen any longer, it wont change goodbye.

Chorus:
I scream your name, to the rain,
falling down on me.
Nothing but silence inside me since you left me with nothing to say. So, I scream your name.

Anger so burried deep it feels you up inside,
it spreads like a parrisite, there's nowhere to hide.
I want to let it go, before it smothers my soul.
Uncover my heart again, fill in the hole.

(Chorus)

I fall down to my knees, and my fists hit the ground.
Throw my tears into the stone as the thunder sounds.

(Chorus)

"most of the time" bob dylan: (some of the lyrics)

Most of the time
She ain't even in my mind,
I wouldn't know her if I saw her
She's that far behind.
Most of the time
I can't even be sure
If she was ever with me
Or if I was with her.

Most of the time
I'm halfway content,
Most of the time
I know exactly where I went,
I don't cheat on myself, I don't run and hide,
Hide from the feelings, that are buried inside,
I don't compromised and I don't pretend,
I don't even care if I ever see her again
Most of the time.

The hardest part about the breakup is the manufactured drama about how great it could have be if only the relationship continued... just a bit longer. Well, it ended and that elusive magic hidden for some reason isn’t likely to ever arrive even if things continued. After all the breakups through the years I definitely learned that not only will the pain pass but I’ll be in a better place.

Nevertheless, one of the most amazing lyrics that cuts straight to the heart of all the pain belongs to Pearl Jam, "Black":

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a star...
In somebody elses life...
Why can't it be mine....

Interesting stuff....

how about Don't Speak by No Doubt?

You and me
We used to be together
Every day together always

I really feel
I'm losing my best friend
I can't believe
This could be the end

It looks as though you're letting go
And if it's real,
Well I don't want to know

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts

Our memories
They can be inviting
But some are altogether
Mighty frightening

As we die, both you and i
With my head in my hands
I sit and cry

It's all ending
I gotta stop pretending who we are...
You and me
I can see us dying ... are we?

...seems more of a "oh damn the relationship is in trouble" song to me but it works for some.
