Three magic little words
This brilliant little gem was snagged from Daypop:

"Whenever a phone solicitor calls in the middle of dinner, don't get sore. Don't slam down the receiver. Don't hang up. Just say, 'Hold on, please.' Then gently set the receiver on the table and go about your business. Why will this change the world? Because the solicitor will hold on, too. While the solicitor is on hold, he cannot bug other people in the middle of dinner, can he? No, he can't.

Phone solicitors make money because one or two saps in every 100 calls actually listen to the sales pitch and buy something. But what if each unsuccessful call took the solicitor a few minutes instead of a few seconds? What if a phone solicitor could make only a dozen calls per hour, instead of several hundred? Then it would no longer be cost-effective to bother people in the middle of dinner, would it? No, it wouldn't.
"

So if you can't move to Vermont, try the three magic little words instead!

Try one of the 32 ways to answer your phone!

Boy, this is one time when I am actually thankful I am deaf. I never answer the phone.

This is in my bookmarks...Fun With Telemarketers.

I love that idea, Robyn...we can not only save others from this annoyance, but as we enjoy our peaceful dinner, we can laugh our asses off at the telemarketer who's hangin' on the line!

my stepdad does that.

in all honesty, I did telemarketing for a few months -- and for the majority of the time, I loved the job. everyone I worked with were people trying to make a living -- some were working extra hours because their jobs as waitresses weren't supporting the kids. anyway -- I get irritated at them too -- but they're just trying to make a living. your best bet? tell them to remove your name from the list -- and note the day and time, and who you spoke with. if they call again, it's like a $5,000 fine.

and do it early in the call. don't "feel bad" and listen to their speil. nothing sucked more than going through the whole rant thinking they actually might buy something, only to realize you were losing your commission because someone didn't have the heart to hang up on you.

Erika, I was actually on our local NBC news about 2 years ago because I had asked Capital One to put us on the 'do not call' list -- and they still called up to 6 months later. A few letters and phone calls from "8 On Your Side", and an on-camera interview with me, finally did the trick. But there was a time (thank goodness for Caller ID!) when we logged up to 25 calls a day from them! Somehow our number just kept getting replicated and sold off in their databases. I had several friends do short-stints in telemarketing during college though -- I don't blame the actual callers at all. Just the system. I really hope Vermont will set an example and change things!

I forgot to add that even though I had enough documentation for the local news to make a story out of it and get results -- even the reporter told me it would have been a complete waste of my time (and money) to pursue legal action hoping for the 5-grand. She offered to find out how we could fight it in court, but it just wasn't worth it. Making the phone calls stop once and for all was reward enough!

That is priceless. I will have to try it! When I don't have to be @ school, I stay on the Internet all day because we get so many phone calls!
