Man's best friend
We saw this story on the local news last night, and both took turns hugging Claire repeatedly. A dog (now) named Quentin was put in a Missouri gas chamber to be euthanized with other unwanted/unclaimed dogs, but when the door was opened following the gas, it stood there very much alive. Because of the divine intervention, the dog has now been taken to a local no-kill shelter, is doing just fine, and has several people wanting to adopt it. Please -- spay or neuter your pets if you haven't already. Little Quentin was very much the lucky one in this daily scenario repeated all over the country. Unfortunately not all shelters are no-kill.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Then why couldn't all these "good samaritans" adopt the ones that were gassed? Argh.

I saw the story earlier, and was pretty much thinking the same thing as Seki. This dog is pretty amazing because of what happened, but there are thousands and thousands of other animals out there... :(

Yeah, I know... I'm preachin' to the choir. :) I'm glad Quentin has a chance at a happy life. He deserves it. :)

The last 2 dogs my parents got were adopted from a shelter or from people who didn't want it anymore. There are 2 other lessons here:

DON'T get an animal unless you are willing to put in the 10-20 years.

If you want a pet adopt one- they make the most loving and loyal pets.

Emma, our Humane Society Rescue lab mix was spayed today. Beau our other HSR will be *ahem* fixed next week.

I'm glad Quentin will have a happy home.

Charlie, our kitty was a HSR, too. He was our first HRS rescue, and now we have three. :)

Aaah that's so sad! I live in The Netherlands and more and more shelters here are no kill :) I'm happy for Dutch dogs but sad for the American doggies.

Out here, we have more no-kill animal shelters than not. But the sad thing is that the best known shelter, the OSPCA, kills off animals on a continual basis (not to mention they're about as humane as as swift kick to the head).

My Mother lives in an area that people just drop animals off on the side of the road. That's how I've ended up with the majority of the cats I had in my youth (between house pets and the cats I raised at my neighbour's barn, I've cared for over 30 cats), and my long haired tabby was a rescue from a lumber yard. My problem is, I'm a huge suck and will take in each and every stray I find. My husband's just as bad. But if we take any animals to a shelter, that's the first thing I find out - weither or not the facility is a no-kill shelter or not. And I also put in a clause in there that if they can't find a home for them, I'll take them back. Luckily enough, there's a lot of soft hearts out there who are willing to put in the 10-20 years and every animal I've brought in has found a good home.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have this uncontrollable urge to hug the bejebbus out of my pets.
