I always feel like somebody's watchin' me
Floridians may or may not be aware of this state policy -- but rather than being able to "opt-in" to make your drivers license information public, in this state you have to "opt-out". Otherwise by default your information is automatically accessible when you obtain a Florida driver's license. If you haven't filled out the official "opt-out" application, individuals and companies can buy your home address and other identifying information. For more information on how to request your information be made private (we did this several months ago and it took a few weeks to process), visit the Driver Privacy Protection Act website.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

When I went there for my ID in March they actually asked me if I wanted my personal information public or private. Of course I told them private, who wants their info public?!

Is there anyway I can double check my info is on the "opt-out" list?

They didn't offer that as an option for us when we got our Florida licenses in '97 -- good to know they're doing that now! You can enter your license number here and it will tell you whether or not the state has blocked your info.

It was clear that in the early 80's, the state of New Jersey offered no such privacy.

An ex-boyfriend, who I left because he was beating the crap out of me, found me because he had access to such information. There were no anti-stalking laws or anything 20 years ago, so I had no choice but to move out of state.

IMO, NO information such as this should be made public in the first place. With all the domestic partner abuse out there, there should be some way for the abusee to hide from the abuser.

I also had grounds to sue what was once New Jersey Bell...because I paid for an unlisted, unpublished number...but some chick that psycho-asshole was fucking on the side worked for the phone company, and gave him my new number. But I was scared for my life, and didn't want to hang around long enough to do it.

I need to check out the laws in Messychusetts about this! But if this loser ex ever came here NOW...Mike would kill him. A good side benefit of being married to a former military man!

Scary, scary shit!

I saw this on the news down here in Miami today. Of course I signed up immediately.

I've decided to blame all the problems I've had while living in Florida the past seven years on the fact that my public records were available to everyone until today. ;)

Georgia, too. They sell all DMV info as a matter of course. California did as well, as of 1995 (when I moved away from there and back down south). The might have changed the law - but I doubt it.

Federal Driver Privacy Protection Act has made all states comply with the privacy provisions, no matter what they did in the past. Go Big Govt!

I can just see it now...the fine, upstanding, hard working buttweasels currently masquerading as the Florida Legislature will probably start crying about all the lost revenue from the now-private info they can no longer sell. With their mindset, they'll probably try to force the DMV to make all the info public again so us poor, misled citizens can rethink our decisions once they've filled us in on their made-up facts.

Holy cow. *bows to Robyn* The Hub and I have now very promptly added ourselves to the list of "get your grubby hands off my info."
