This is a request, Mr. Radio Man
My blog is going to remain silent today as I take time to reflect on friendships and how precious life really is... While I'm taking the day off, I'll leave you with this:

Todd and I have started listening to our local "oldies" station's new format in the car. But I'm not talking shoo-do-wop, groups that start with the word "Four" for $200 Alex, kinda oldies. The following are just a sampling of what they are now calling "the greatest oldies of the 70s, 80s and early 90s" on this station:

  1. Girls on Film - Duran Duran
  2. Losing My Religion - R.E.M.
  3. Need You Tonight - INXS
  4. Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode
  5. We Got the Beat - The Go-Go's
  6. Der Komissar - After the Fire
  7. Goody Two Shoes - Adam Ant
  8. Pop Musik - M
Please note: it's no longer being called "retro". It's oldies. Although I think it's great we finally have a station we can stomach (that is, in between the Springsteen and Bon Jovi they also play here and there) -- I'm also quite distressed that while we seem to have one hand on the radio dial, the other is now on a bottle of Geritol. Did our parents go through this when the Beatles became oldies, too?

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

holy shit. Enjoy the Silence is 13 years old. I must make ready my funeral preparations. Not too much longer now :(

The Phoenix Oldies station I listen to has been playing a lot of late 70's/early 80's music lately, and while I do enjoy some of those songs, I think I'll always think of 50's, 60's, and early 70's music as true "oldies." You're right, though... the music we grew up with is moving into that category. Scary!

If you've got DirecTV they have a music station called New Wave that plays all of those, with no Bon Jovi, EVER. F***in brilliant.

This is a big improvement from the old 80's station that had the extra Bon Jovi'ish material interspersed...

Can't help you in the car, but I hear XM is pretty good in this regard. $10 a month for radio? Maybe, in the words of Dennis Miller, if it comes with a reach around.

Could you please hand me my walker?

So that explains the squeaky knees, hip replacement last month and frequent trips to the bathroom. Can I get my SS checks yet?

Yes, we're all getting old. Some of our favourite songs of the 80's are actually 20 years old.

I hope you can spend today thinking back about some good times when you hear these 'old fogey' tunes :)

There are so many more unanswered questions when someone dies in this way that you can really tear yourself apart inside if you dwell on it for too long. Unless he left a detailed note, I don't think there will be any answers. It's very sad indeed. On paper he seemed to 'have it all'. I feel for you and also his family and his partner. Those who were in constant contact with him must be eating themselves alive at the moment wondering what they could have done. I can't even begin to imagine how that would feel.

I'm sure you were the best possible friend you could have been to Kevin. You do a pretty damn good job with the rest of us :) ((hugs))

Come on June!!!!!

Oldies?! OLDIES?! That's killing me...

Now where did I put my metamucil? I think I left it on top of, wait what were we talking about?

Hmm...

Perhaps this explains why 60-year old women keep hitting on me lately (I think I've written about 2-3 of them on my blog).

At least you're already in Florida. :D

"My blog is going to remain silent today ..."

Heh. THAT couldn't have been more prophetic. You picked a good day for it. :)

CBS-FM, the doo-wop oldies station in NYC, plays 80s songs occasionally. And, for that matter, so does the classic rock station.

I refuse not to be bothered by that.

How prophetic is it that your "oldies" station revalation coincides with the 30th birthday?! Gee thanks! As if I wasn't feeling "old" enough already, Robyn!! ;)

Tipping a few back tonight for friends both old & new - the one's we've met and the one's we haven't yet.

Take me drunk, I'm home (and it's only 9:30?!)

27 more hours of this twenty-somthing sh*t! Crank up the oldies!!

dang, i'm jealous. i only wish we had an oldies station like that up here in d.c. the so-called "alternative" stations play more of that rap crap than i can stomach, and the "oldies" stations still play the 60's-70s crap-ola.

actually, i've been debating getting xm satellite because my commute is so long and boring, and i am sick to death of all of the other stations.

Oldies?? *sigh* Does this mean that I know how to accept that I'm OLD??! Sheesh!

I felt the same way when I saw "Tron" on Turner Classic Movies...I remember when that was all cool and futuristic, and now it's a classic? Ack!

I grew up listening to my dad's oldies station - 50's and 60's stuff - and now that the "oldies" stations are playing 70's and early 80's stuff, there's nowhere to find the real oldies. Humph. I'll have to start listening to the old fogies' AM station next: your source for early Sinatra and the hits of the WWII era.

Ugh...we're old!

Pass the Geritol.

The Beatles are oldies???

Robyn, 101.5 is my new favorite station...I'm guessing that one is the one you're referring to unless someone else has changed formats lately. They do tend to get stuck on a few chart topppers and one hit wonders from time to time, I'd like a little more new wave and less, well, uh....crap. It's wasn't ALL good in the 80's. (And I'm 27 this summer, so if those are oldies, what the hell does that make me?)

¤ ¤ credit: Colleen | 05.29.03 at 03:53 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Yep -- that's the one!
