The other monuments so white and clean
Editorial: Y'know, I was just sitting here thinking...this weekend is why I'm really not ready for someone to make a federal holiday out of 9-11. All I can think of right now is "three day weekend" and "beach". But it's Memorial Day weekend. Not very many of us stop and celebrate it as intended any longer, do we? It's just too soon for me to have another excuse to hit the beach and throw a white sale... I honestly prefer remembering that day in my own way for now.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

I hear ya. I wish sometimes that the US had bank holidays like the UK that gave us 3day holidays, so that the holidays like Memorial Day had more poignancy. Instead, because we have so few days off, we're so excited to get a break, we don't even pay attention to the reason. Sigh.

We all know why we celebrate Memorial Day...
Please tell me what is the proper way to celebrate it. Sieze the day!!! I know why we celebrate it..I think you shouldn't feel bad for going to the beach or think of it as an excuse.....just my little opinion though, which doesn't matter...right?

That's kinda not my point -- 9-11 is too fresh and personal in my memory to think of it as another "beach day".

I see what your saying now...sorry about that. I thought you were talking about Memorial Day. I agree, I don't think they should make a holiday out of 9-11...what is there to celebrate? People lost their lives.

Didn't Dubya declare it Patriots Day? Or am I remembering incorrectly? But yeah, there's something seriously wrong with tailgating, bbq'ing, drinking beer and watching sports games on Sept 11th. Like Robyn said...at least for now.....

He did last year (not sure if that was a recurring, annual thing or not) -- but I don't believe it was a federal holiday closing everything down, but rather a national observance.

I used to, and think I will again this year, buy a bunch of flowers and take them to my local cemetery every memorial day and veterans day. Any graves of service men that had been untended I would place a flower on. There were never enough flowers, but it always made the day a bit happier to know I had said my private thanks.

I think memorial day is different for everyone. If you never lost anyone you dont have the same things to reflect on as someone who did.

As for a 911 holiday, I hope not. A day of observance yes but if we were to get the day off from work, I'd stay in bed all day and probably cry. I have images burned in my mind that will never fade.

Definately never intend to "celebrate" 9/11. Every morning I cross the Manhattan Bridge on the train and see that spot where they were. This past 9/11 I rode the train like any other day and as we emerged from the darkness of the tunnel and out onto the bridge I looked around and saw many emotional expressions and tears in people's eyes. A woman across from me sobbed openly and I couldn't help but let the tears fall too. 9/11 is not something I will ever be able to look back on and shrug and say "I'm just glad I have the day off to go to the beach..." NEVER. That day signifies trauma and sadness for me and so many others and that is all it will ever signify.

Memorial day...much different for me. The importance of it was really never emphasized to me, or maybe I just failed to pay attention. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do...except for bbq and go to the beach, though the beach won't be happening because it is still freaking cold here!!! (Damn yous in Tampa!) Here is an offensive yet somewhat ironic little blurb someone wrote. Your URL feature is the best.

You know, even though Memorial Day began in the South, I think it's celebrated more in the North . When I was a kid, we lived in a little town in New Hampshire, and every Memorial Day there was a parade. I realize I'm dating myself here, but at that time the parades were led by 3 or 4 veterans from World War I (I remember their hats were different), followed by a larger contingent of World War II vets, and then Korean War veterans. It was actually quite stirring.

And once on Memorial Day we were visiting my grandparents who lived in a little farming community in Minnesota, and they had a small ceremony at the park where the names of all the boys from this little town who had ever served and died in the military were read. Again, very touching.

I think the problem with Memorial Day just being a day off is that few communities plan any sort of observance anymore. I thought the worst idea along those lines was when they decided to have Veterans Day on a Monday instead of on "the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month". Moving people's birthdays to Mondays to facilitate a long weekend also rubs me the wrong way.

Oops. Sorry to run on...
