I always feel like somebody's watching me
This is as frightening as it is fascinating. How much of what we share blogging is too much?

Savvy Web users are using Google.com and other powerful Web search tools to track down or keep tabs on long-lost acquaintances -- be they former lovers, classmates, friends or enemies. These searches, which once might have required hiring a private detective, have become increasingly easy as the amount of data available on the Web grows. (Read more at CNN.com. Also check out this article at Guardian Unlimited* titled "A blogger is a stalker's dream".)
* Will the person that passed along the Guardian link (included in an entry they wrote) please stand up? I seem to have lost the e-mail -- and I want to link you, too.

I know the way I blogged forever changed when someone started showing up at places and events we mentioned attending in our blogs. You never know just who is out there now -- and later, thanks to search engines.   UPDATE: Check out this entry and comments at Scripty Goddess if you would like to try and prevent Google and other search engines from indexing.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

I'm not too worried. No one in my past hates me enough to bother disrupting their daily lives to intrude on mine. And to strangers, I'm just too boring to bother to stalk. It also helps being 90 pounds overweight!

I first spotted the Guardian article at Gretchen's site yesterday. I've drafted a post about it, but was waaaaaaay too tired to finish it last night. Seems 5 days of only 3-5 hours of sleep will finally catch up to you after all.

That's why I use a pseudonym instead of my real name...but it was mostly so that work associates wouldn't find my blog and know I had one.

Several MacWorlds ago (1996?), we saw the *same* dude at almost every restaurant our group ate at. Come to find out it was a guy who hung out on our IRC channel (yeah, I'm old skool like that). It wasn't that he was shy - he just wanted to be able to talk like he was there...for the sole purpose of being creepy..

I wrote a bit about it after I saw it on Gretchen's site, but more from the point of writing with a purpose rather than being stalked, which is one reason why I had to close down my other site recently. It seemed certain in-laws did not care for the style inwhich I was writing and began to make trouble outside cyber space, now I am too am using a different name. Interesting article.

After changing my domain so it did not reflect my real name, I added a no-archive block to all of my individual and category pages because of the search factor. A disgruntled student of mine found my old blog and left an anonymous threat. That was all it took to relocate me, though because I genuinely enjoy blogging, I don't want to stop just yet!

I've used google to find friends - as recently as today - with good results. But the article is right. Some people make it too easy to find them. It's amazing what you can find on an online records search at myflorida.com - when people got married, bought homes, etc. And as Robyn found out, there are some nuts out there.

Isn't that scriptygoddess tidbit awesome? I have it on all of my blog pages and my journal....for some reason, the main page of my journal won't accept the code - it shows it as part of the page - but when I get my new layout together, I'll be putting it there, too.

Geez, remember the days when we *wanted* the search engines to find us?
