Once bitten, twice shy
Has there been any good news this month? Seriously?

Suddenly I'm very glad my clubbing days are pretty much over... First the, stampede Monday night in Chicago that killed 21. Then Thursday night, a fire (at least 10-20 dead, over 110 injured as of 4:30 a.m. EST) at a club in Rhode Island. I guess it's probably the wrong time to ponder the fact that 80s hair band Great White actually had 300 paying fans in 2003, huh?

Footnote: According to CNN, the worst nightclub fire in U.S. history occurred November 28, 1942. November 28, 1972, is my birthday. Eeep.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

I'm with you. 300 people for a Great White concert? Was Quiet Riot opening for them or something?

I remember seeing Great White at Sandstone in KC in 1990...memories. Hard to believe they had even 300 paying customers now. Those poor people. :(

I love 80's hair metal. This is awful. The stampede here in Chicago was totally senseless. The club was told to close the dance floor (which was on the second floor above the bar and restaraunt) because of building violations MONTHS ago. They were almost 200 people PAST safety code for maximum capasity; it's almost a miracle the dance floor didn't collapse. I'm appalled at what club owners will do and codes they ignore just to make extra cash. I'm sure that these two incidents arn't the only violators. Beware at a club near you!

Sorry about the spelling. It's amazing all of the typos you can make when typing in a fit of anger!

Pyrotechnics + lots of big hair + no sprinklers = recipe for disaster. Terrible shame.

Following the Chicago deaths, I blogged about the 1942 fire, in which 492 people perished in Boston's Cocoanut Grove night club.

See here for more details

it's up to 54 now... also, a guitarist is missing.

remember all the hype about the anthrax? weeks upon weeks of news coverage? how many people actually died from that? two, i believe.

as a nation, we gotta get our priorities in order...

I'm with Kathryn...I love 80's hair metal as well. My BF just made me a CD of all hair metal bands since he knew I liked them...
It's great to see some of these guys still touring, but what happened at the nightclub is simply tragic. Fingers are already being pointed. Like I said on today's post on my page...is it just me, or should pyrotechnics NOT be allowed to be used during a concert in a NIGHTCLUB? Can we say small venue and no margin for error? Simply ridiculous, in my book. This never should have happened.
But then again, we say that about a lot of things...

¤ ¤ credit: Lisa | 02.21.03 at 10:39 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

it's another tragedy, especially with 1 band member still missing, but I was also wondering how they had so many fans there.

Quiet Riot probably would have been playing in a month or so; they're usually there about every couple of months or so.

In terms of the club violating safety codes... There weren't any sprinklers because the club was so tiny, 350 is max capacity of the building. The club regularly passes fire inspections, which don't require the sprinklers in a building of this size. It's a very popular little club for local dj's to go to; one of the best local dj's is still missing. The guitarist for Great White is still missing. The brother of the woman who performed my wedding is still missing. Victims dead is confirmed at 65 right now, and there are confirmed that there are more, so I'm assuming that there's more bodies that haven't been separated yet.

Oddly enough, a similar situation - with far less tragic results - occurred in Minneapolis Monday night.

¤ ¤ credit: The Bloviator | 02.21.03 at 12:18 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

While it's easy to make 80's hair band jokes, please, let's remember those whose lives this changes. Such as Crystal who commented before me. Nobody close to the tragedy is laughing. :(

¤ ¤ credit: queen | 02.21.03 at 12:20 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

For some - the music they like is more then a fad - more then just a phase - more then just something to do. It's a part of their lives. It get's them thru. And yes - Great White, right along with Poison, Cinderella, and others, pull in good to great numbers of people on tour every year - WITHOUT RECORD INDUSTRY SUPPORT.

That happens, not just amoungst "hair bands" (DAMN I hate that term) but amoungst all sorts of rock genres that aren't the current flavor of the week (day).

Wonder why the music industry sells less? because the industry no longer pays attention.

Say a prayer for those people today. What a terrible tragedy.

Did anyone hear what the town fire marshall said; it was something to the effect of "The exits were all clear, but you have to take into consideration these were Great White fans, and probably weren't smart enough to find a way out different from the way they came in."

Nice, eh?

¤ ¤ credit: Lunchbox | 02.21.03 at 12:38 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Gee thats nice, making fun of some people that got hurt really bad, and some that have even died. I hope you are proud of yourself.

Ed, I live in Rhode Island, 15 miles from the fire, my best man at my wedding lives about 1000 feet from the scene of the fire.

¤ ¤ credit: ed | 02.21.03 at 12:46 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I feel sick that so many people died, but I was thinking the same thing. Great White? 300 people there to see them? *shakes head* I just heard their guitarist is missing too. Wow. Too much tragedy lately.

¤ ¤ credit: Jenni | 02.21.03 at 01:05 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

ed - Lunchbox was quoting what the town fire marshall said.

¤ ¤ credit: Ruthie | 02.21.03 at 01:45 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

chicky, I am so sorry -- I just don't know what to say!

Lunchbox, that is just awful -- you think authority figures would have a little more tact/compassion.

And I don't want anyone to get the impression I was making fun of anyone's pain. Ever. But especially this month of all months in my life. Please check the first sentence of this entry again if in doubt. I'm simply floored that every time I check CNN...it just gets worse... I will never be so happy to flip a calendar to the next month!

And sorry for those who don't like the term 'hair band'. I'm sure 'boy band' fans don't like that term either (especially when some of the members of said-bands are over the 30 mark when performing). But, MTV and VH-1 have given us labels for everything.

As for my number of fans comment -- now if they had said Poison or Quiet Riot, I could see the 300 mark. But I barely remember Great White. (And I went to a small-town high school in the late 80s and early 90s that was "hair-band" obsessed.)

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 02.21.03 at 01:53 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Lord, I know...this is pretty darned scary, eh?

¤ ¤ credit: Crystal | 02.21.03 at 02:19 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Yeah, I still have to look forward to going to clubs, but now I am a bit scarred of them. Something like 60 people dead in Rhode Island. Geez.

¤ ¤ credit: Andrew | 02.21.03 at 02:20 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Interesting development...Evidentally, Great White played at the famous Stone Pony here in Jersey a few weeks ago, and the owner of that club said the band pulled out pyrotechnics without any warning to the club staff. Of course nothing happened here, but maybe the band isn't as innocent as they are making themselves out to be.

¤ ¤ credit: Darren | 02.21.03 at 02:34 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Per the Associated Press, it's now up to 85 dead and counting. This is horrible.

Back when I was in college and doing the club thing 7 nights a week, I can remember on many occasions thinking to myself "if there was a fire in here, a lot of people would die". It's just an inherent danger in packing large numbers of people into confined spaces (and adding alcohol), and I'm frankly amazed (but very thankful) that this sort of thing doesn't happen more.

I'm with you Robyn- this month needs to be over. Of course, we've got a war to look forward to next month.

¤ ¤ credit: dave | 02.21.03 at 02:34 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Stone Pony owner on CNN right now. The band and/or management, definately doesn't sound so innocent.

I'm with ya Robyn too. May this month just get over with!

¤ ¤ credit: Karl | 02.21.03 at 03:32 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

2:45 pm CST, and the toll is now at 86 with the toll to be expected to rise according to the Governor. This is awful. And I hope what is being said about the band not having permission to use pyrotechnics is not true, but it doesn't seem to be the case. I've never heard of pyrotechnics being used in a CLUB before. Common sense should tell you it's a bad idea. Hell, lit cigarettes have burned a lot of my clubbing clothes, what makes people think it's okay to set off frikkin' fireworks in a club? The headlines are right; this should've never happened.

*ashamed to admit* that their next stop on this tour was Springfield, VA and Tommy and I were considering going. Last year we saw Quiot Riot in a dive bar in G-vegas. It's kinda fun watching the "fall from glory".

¤ ¤ credit: Tara | 02.21.03 at 04:13 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I am SO thankful right now. We totally could have decided to go and it could have happened to us. I feel so bad for all the families and can't believe how the authorities are handling all this.

Last thought on this topic. It's a tragedy yes, but why hasn't the issue of "sprinklers" come up yet. I thought that any building that occupies more than 50 people is suppose to be equipped with a sprinkler system. This probably would have save many lives. I've also heard criminal charges will be filed against club owners and maybe Great White as well.

¤ ¤ credit: Darren | 02.21.03 at 04:30 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

When I was but a wee high school lad I can remember getting into the LA MetalHead bars like Gazzari's and Whickey-a-go-go. Huge numbers of people there and the sheer press of people in a clsoe place like that would make things confusing. Add in the smoke and confusion of a disaster in the making and you have a huge problem.

It is just a sickening thing, and the hair band comments are a bit displaced. Most of these hair rockers lost the mullets in the Mid nineties, much less poofy, ratted bangs.

Hair-raising rock 'n' roll -- © St. Petersburg Times, May 31, 2001

In a very special 10 Pressing Questions, two hair metal pioneers answer the tough questions about rock 'n' roll cars, chicks with tattoos and the importance of flossing your teeth. Poison lead singer Bret Michaels and Quiet Riot yelper Kevin DuBrow, in separate calls from Texas during their Perfect Hairball III tour, give the lowdown.....

(3) Do you hate the term "hair metal"?

Michaels: You can call me anything you want. I wear my sash proudly as the number one hair metal band in the world. (Editor's note: VH1 voted Poison Top Hair Band of all time). That's one of the things I love about Poison. We love what we do. We're very comfortable in our skin.

DuBrow: I don't care what they call it. (Annoyed) Look, it's a title that makes people feel comfortable and that's fine.

According to CNN and MSNBC, the club lost all power within a couple of minutes -- so in addition to smoke and flames, it was pitch black inside. A recipe for a terrible, terrible disaster.

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 02.21.03 at 05:47 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Simply sending ... the fact that you are in my thoughts, my heart. Not having read all of these comments at all...

They are hard days, I guess..

"why hasn't the issue of "sprinklers" come up yet. I thought that any building that occupies more than 50 people is suppose to be equipped with a sprinkler system. This probably would have save many lives."

Darren- according to the fire chief, they weren't required to have sprinklers, based on their occupancy and square footage. I think those requirements vary from state to state.

They may or may not have helped- the fire started in the ceiling and appears to have stayed there for a while. it was the smoke that killed a lot of the people. If sprinklers are directed mainly downward, they may not have been terribly effective. In fact, they'd have made the floor really wet. If it was a slick tile or concrete floor, people may have started slipping and falling all over each other even earlier than they did. I'm just speculating, of course. Maybe it would've helped. Who knows.

¤ ¤ credit: dave | 02.21.03 at 06:13 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Local news just did some interviews regarding the sprinklers. Contrary to my prior comment about the size of the building being the reason there were no sprinklers, in addition to the size of the club, the official reason is this:

In RI, all buildings of this sort built after 1975 (I think they said mid-70's) are required to be built with sprinklers. However, this building was built in 1950, and therefore was not required to have a sprinkler system in it.

In regards to the power going out: Yes, the power did go out; however, battery powered emergency lights (those high powered jobs you see in some buildings) did go on, but because of the thickness and quantity of smoke that was in the building, the lights were pretty much useless.

(btw Robyn, I wasn't referring to your post being a joke about the fire, when I posted it seemed as though many of the comments were making the jokes about washed up hair bands)

This is sorta off topic, but it's good news so I'm sharing it anyway!

My boss and his wife have just adopted a baby boy! This is the third child they've been told they can adopt, the first two birth moms changed their minds partway through the process. But this one is really happening and they're parents now! Very good news.

I watched the video on CNN (someone who was taping the show and made it out alive) It was so bad I had to turn it off halfway thru, but it just broke my heart. You can see people pointing to the stage when the fire started and the band couldn't see it because it was behind them, and they were just oblivious. Then to hear people trying to get out and screaming that they couldn't move....ugh. It just made me sick to my stomach. What a tragedy.

As a side note, I got to see Quiet Riot and Poison 2 years ago in Missouri...fun concert, and they had a lot of fans show up.

I move out of the state and NOW all of the excitement happens. All jokes aside, its really terrible what happened.

¤ ¤ credit: jay | 02.21.03 at 09:52 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I hope this isn't redundant and I just missed it. I read on BBC that three fire exits were almost completely unused, and that everyone stampeded for the door through which they had entered.

Makes me think and plan any time I'm in a crowded place. Heartbreaking and horrifying.

I was in Chicago on Tuesday and it was amazing the amount of finger-pointing that was done on the local TV stations. The authorities were blaming the owner(s) up to the point of the Reverend Jesse Jackson (what church does he preach at anyway?) having a hand in getting extensions for the owner(s) to work around the safety codes. Ultimately, it is the city officials who must shut down something like this before it happens. The owner(s) if allowed will continue to keep open and admit more people than what is deemed to be safe - after all their goal is not to follow laws and ordinances; their goal is to make money.

Oh, one more note on Great White. Their hit you use for the title of this entry, Robyn, is a remake. Humble Pie did it first in the 60's with a skinny little big-hair guitar player named Peter Frampton.
