It'll be...just like starting over
One of the new Chili Peppers songs came on the radio tonight when we were driving to Clearwater. Although I would rate it about 3x better than most of the new crap out these days, I'm sorry, but it's a far cry from being the Chili Peppers I came of age with. We started making a mental list of bands that should've hung it up a long, long time ago. Of course The Stones were the first to top that list. But they're from the obvious Geritol era. We quickly moved on to bands we grew up on -- our favorites that shouldn't have been allowed to stay together post-1996 (a year after we'd left college), some even earlier. Here's a few to get the ball rolling:

1. Chili Peppers, obviously
2. The Cure
3. R.E.M.
4. Depeche Mode
5. Duran Duran, although Electric Barbarella wasn't half-bad

When aging rock stars go sad... Sometimes unfortunately, an early death is better than the alternative. Who would you add to the list?

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Tiffany. Without a doubt, she needs to stop putting out albums.

Lance, do you know about my anti-Puffy site?

LMAO,anti-Puffy site...You kill me !

Alternica... I mean, Metallica. God, these guys suck now. There will never be another Ride the Lightning from them, I'm sure of that! :-p

Oh, to take a page from the stuff you listen to, I actually rather like the modern stuff from Tears for Fears. "Elemental" and "Raoul and the Kings of Spain" were both great discs, I thought. :)

Aerosmith definitely needs to retire.

Hey, Depeche Mode's new stuff is actually quite good!

¤ ¤ credit: Sekimori | 01.26.03 at 01:53 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen (my wife would likely not agree), Neil Diamond (his old stuff ruled), and I couldn't agree more about Peppers and Metallica, what the hell happened?

¤ ¤ credit: Damelon Kimbrough | 01.26.03 at 01:53 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Really Seki? We just haven't been impressed with DM since Faith and Devotion...

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 01.26.03 at 02:26 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

i'm with you on the Aerosmith and Metallica, but...Depeche Mode must be stricken from the list. their later works (post Songs of Faith and Devotion) are more mature, deeply moving, spiritual, and stirring. they grew up and put down the smack...amazing what that'll do.

.dne eht

But, but...I liked the smack. ;-)

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 01.26.03 at 02:37 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Sting.

for the love of my EARS, he should just hang. it. UP.

¤ ¤ credit: sledge | 01.26.03 at 02:52 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Ooooooh -- GOOD one, Sledge! I think Elton John and Billy Joel qualify here, too...

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 01.26.03 at 02:53 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Mmmmmm, Faith & Devotion...

Back to the topic: Pearl Jam. Seriously. And how is it again that Tupac has put out 4 absolutely AWFUL post-mortem albums?

¤ ¤ credit: Susan | 01.26.03 at 02:58 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

damn girl, did you have to go for Depeche Mode *sniff* "Ultra" was good!

anyways, um, i agree with the above poster about Aerosmith
Bruce Springsteen
Rolling Stones
RHCP
PEARL JAM! (gawd, they are horrible now!)

¤ ¤ credit: tenika | 01.26.03 at 02:59 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

FWIW...the line on Pearl Jam is that they are holding back the good stuff and just fulfilling their contract with this CD. I'm withholding judgement on them till then, but they'd better kick some ass soon or I'll fling 10 right back at 'em.

Oh, and can we add Tom Petty to the list? I hate to, him being a Florida boy and all, but he either needs to hang it up, or just become a Bob Dylan imitator in Vegas.

Robyn; yes I saw your anti-puff site. I loved it. The best I have seen.

GET POOFS - NOT PUFF!

Some old bands CAN reinvent themselves. Styx is an example. They can play their "mid-life" tunes from the 80s and still are putting out songs. Of course, there is only one of the original band members left. (Please don't tell me that Tommy Shaw was in the band originally, I know better)

¤ ¤ credit: BillH | 01.26.03 at 04:04 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. For the love of God, make it stop.

Regarding Elton John and Billy Joel, those guys should stop making NEW stuff, but I caught them together in concert last year, and I gotta tell you, they put on one hell of a show doing the old stuff. (Unlike the Stones and Barry Manilow, who just embarrass themselves when they take the stage.) Also candidates for this list, Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles both have new stuff coming out this year. I suspect it will suck. They should also stick to playing the old stuff.

Counting Crows! August and Everything After was a simply brilliant disc. All of their later albums have shown a very steady decline in quality/brilliance.

¤ ¤ credit: Snoop | 01.26.03 at 11:03 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

I have to disagree on R.E.M.

R.E.M. is one of those bands that don't kowtow to public opinion. It seems that after "Document" and "Out Of Time" people started expecting something from them that they couldn't / wouldn't deliver and so the anti-R.E.M. backlash started. I think that by constantly evolving and staying fresh they may not be radio's sweethearts any more, but they're certainly still vital and important to the music world.

¤ ¤ credit: Tam | 01.26.03 at 11:57 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

I agree about REM, Tam, and you could make that argument about a lot of the bands listed here. Only a few of them are making truly awful music (ie. Def Leppard). Most of them are just making music that isnt catching on with the masses any more, for whatever reason. Sort of like Woody Allen in the movie world. He's still one of the best writer/directors out there, but he hasn't had a "hit" in years, and really isnt likely to ever have another one.

¤ ¤ credit: dave | 01.26.03 at 12:22 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

you shouldn't say such things about depeche mode ... YOU SHOULDN'T SAY SUCH THINGS!

¤ ¤ credit: tj | 01.26.03 at 01:44 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Paul McCartney, right after the Beatles breakup. "Band on the Run" was pretty good, but doesn't justify most of the rest of his junk.

¤ ¤ credit: markj | 01.26.03 at 01:46 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Motley Crue. I hate to say it because I loved all of their older stuff growing up, but they need to stop as well.

¤ ¤ credit: nastybastard | 01.26.03 at 02:21 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Guys, I didn't start listening to R.E.M. and Depeche Mode when they WERE catching on to the masses. In fact, I'd say (in my opinion) that both of their creativities started to decline once they did. I have been fans of each band since junior high (I graduated high school in 1991 -- so we're talking mid-80s, long before the alternative explosion). Again, in my opinion, Monster was the last thing of note from R.E.M. and Songs of Faith and Devotion for Depeche Mode -- both obviously popular -- but my vinyl and cassette collections for each band go back muuuuuuuch further than that. And I still buy their music today. I just haven't been happy with it. Reveal is about the best thing R.E.M. has done in awhile, and only "Imitation of Life" had that once-upon-a-time "oomph" of brilliance to me. If you're happy with the new stuff, more power to you. A lot of fans don't agree though.

the B-52's come to mind.

¤ ¤ credit: Jody | 01.26.03 at 03:22 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Agreed on the REM. And for the love of Zeus, make the Rolling Stones stop.

Sting, any hair metal band that is currently on a "reunion" tour, RHCP and oh...Metallica should have stopped right before they made the Black album.

Leave DM out of this!

Ok, watching the Super Bowl pregame I see I neglected to include Carlos Santana in my list. For the love of god, make that man stop.

CELINE DION!

She quit once already, for crying out loud.

make it stop!

¤ ¤ credit: sledge | 01.26.03 at 06:09 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

You said it, sledge!

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 01.26.03 at 06:11 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Was anyone else completely weirded out that she sang god bless america? She's friggin' Canadian! MAN I can't stand her...

¤ ¤ credit: Susan | 01.27.03 at 12:23 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

I disagree with listing The Cure, Bloodflowers is excellent!!

¤ ¤ credit: Paul | 01.27.03 at 03:12 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

I know I mentioned Bon Jovi and Def Leppard earlier, but I've reconsidered. My "For the Love of God Make It Stop!" award now goes to Rod Stewart.

¤ ¤ credit: dave | 01.27.03 at 01:45 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

The Cure and R.E.M have produced some of the finest music of their careers during just the past 2 years. Now Billy Corrigan . . . have you heard Zwan? The bloke should have slit his wrist rather than making up listen to this post-Pumpkins "effort."

¤ ¤ credit: Charles | 01.28.03 at 04:29 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Really? That's too bad. I haven't heard it and was looking forward to hearing what he'd come up with.
