Oh, say can you sing
I am getting really sick of "artistic interpretations" with the national anthem. I don't care if it's trendy to do so -- just sing the damn song. We don't need choirs stringing it out gospel-style. We don't need you hitting notes high enough to call all area dogs. We don't need five minute a cappella do-wap interludes. Just the "Star Spangled Banner" as it was written (and intended to be sung), please. I swear some of these anthem-performances are getting to be longer than the games they precede.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the best performance ever was just up the road from ya - Whitney Houston in 1991 at Super Bowl XXV( listen ). I still get goose bumps from that one. Anybody else got a good one?

Oh I agree with that 100% -- performance at the ol' sombrero. I hate Whitney, but that's about the best I've ever heard the song sung!

Here's an interesting article along these lines...

Huh....I was hoping for the HUGE production number with tons of woooooo----oooooooo------ooooooos, and grunting, flame twirling, swashbuckling, tits to the heavens bouncing galore.

I mean, that's what they try to sell us these days.

Ugh. I soooo don't watch the opening or the halftime show anymore.

OHhhhhh my favorite one ever was Carl Lewis singing the National Anthem at some game, I can't remember what game it was, but I remember I laughed my ass off because a)he couldn't sing and b)he didn't know the words. Does anyone else remember that?

As an English guy I can honestly say you have by far the best anthem in the world. It even gives me goosebumps when I hear it live.

I have to agree with you. I hate it when they have to go and get all *creative* on us.

The Star Spangled Banner is a very difficult song to sing well as a soloist. Anyone who can do so has my respect.

I don't know where they got the choir that sang it before today's Titans/Steelers game, but ugggggh... I wanted to cry.

Oh yea. That also goes for those Idol shows as well. Everyone trying to do the "hip" whoooo-hooo" whatever until you can't recognize the song anymore.

I'm in total agreement. In fact, it's one of my husband's and my worst pet peeves. Be true to the Anthem for cryin' out loud, people! The song should get the attention, and it can't when they're messin' it all up that way.

not only did Patti LaBelle sound like an idiot singing the anthem before the Eagles game tonight... but she messed up the words MANY TIMES! dumb.

I absolutely agree...Whitney tore the house down...goosebumps galore...Dixie Chicks will do it for the Superbowl and it should be good. They are a very respectable group. Who cares about the game? I'm watching for the Chicks, SHANIA!!!! (halftime) and the best part-SUPERBOWL COMMERCIALS!!!!

Hands down, the best Nation Anthem I ever heard performed was Martina McBride's at the memorial service shortly after 9/11/2001.

Well I agree about the Anthem. It's a song for our country and written a certain way. DON'T screw it up with your own personal interpretation. It's a cool song just like it is! As far as goosebumps go.........the best ones were really NOT from the NA, they were from that NYC Policeman who sung American the Beautiful for the Olympics in SLC! My god what a voice!

I agree that Whitney's was the best version and I think that Jimi Hendrix's is the best "mangled" version. I guess that one doesn't bother me becuase of the "coolness" factor and the fact that he wasn't singing it. I HATE it when people butcher the National Anthem.

Here, here.

I cringe at "artistic interpretations" of most songs (have you heard the techno version of Bryan Adams "Heaven"? I'm still wondering what's worse: the remake, or the fact that I've read so many people raving about "that new song that (can't remember the singer's name) made? It's so good!") I truly dislike hearing the Star Spangled Banner being mangled. It has a nice enough tune on its own. I don't need to hear anybody (as happened at my high school graduation) warble, "Ohhhhhh, saaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAaaaaaaAAAy caAAaaAAaaAAn yooooooooooooooooooooooooOoooooOu seeee - eeeee - eeee - eeeeeeeeeeeEEEE! I said, caaaaan yooooou seeeeeee - eeee - eeee - EEEEE - eee?" My brother almost walked out of the ceremony.

Hey, I'm as patriotic as the next American. I have one question: Why DO we play our National Anthem before almost every sporting event? What does a sport have to do with patriotism (my apologies to the New England Patriots fans) other than the country where the sport is being played?

In my opinion our "Star Spangled Banner" is the most played and most disrespected song in our country's history. How many crowds are cheering during the song instead of either singing along or standing with their hand over their heart?

I know why we have the two-minute warning, why the free-throw circle is called the key, and why there is an infield fly rule; I simply can't figure out why we play the "Star Spangled Banner" before EVERY one of these sporting events. Any ideas?
