The grandaddy of 'em all wears crimson 'n' cream

OU wins the 2003 Rose Bowl!

How many times did the Sooners have to hear, "You don't deserve to be here." Or, "But you're not a Pac 10 or Big 10 team..." Everything from piss and vinegar out of the likes of Keith Jackson, to smug superiority from coaches, players and reporters. Like the Big XII just isn't good enough to take the field with the other conferences. Very reminiscent of the press coverage before the 2000 title game with FSU. Hell, the Washington State coaching staff even tried to block our Schooner mascot from making the trip to Pasadena.

Well guess what? Not only did the Sooners prove they deserved to be in the Rose Bowl today, they did it with an exclamation point. Do you think OU's players and coaching staff took it personally? Hell yeah they did. Final score? OU - 34. Washington State - 14. OU's first-ever Rose Bowl trophy (from our first-ever Rose Bowl appearance) will be making its trip home to the Switzer Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

Is our 2002-03 football season really over? Congrats to the 2002-03 Sooner squad, all of the exiting seniors, and Rose Bowl MVP Nate Hybl. It's time to fire up the basketball calendar. March Madness will be here before ya' know it!

P.S. Hey Keith Jackson... Got seven?

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Go Sooners! Also, it was good to see the ex-Hawkeyes that populate the Sooner staff now. Q is one exceptional running back, and what a D! I hope the Hawks make as good a showing at the Orange Bowl as the Sooners did at the Rose Bowl!

Hell of a game. I watched it just because of you.

Congrats!

Damn, they wiped up the field with Wershington St, didn't they?
The scores look like Wash just kinda went in thinkin 'eh, Sooners. What can they do? They're from the Sawth...' and you guys went in and creamed em.
I'm not a sports fanatic, I don't read the sports page and I turn off the news when spors comes on, but I'm not so ignant that I can't recognize an all out ass-whoopin. Congrats.

Congrats! I watched most of it just for you, through a haze of NyQuil and Excedrin Migraine.

I felt this weird sense of pride when they won. Look what you've done to me!

You like the Sooners? Why haven't you ever mentioned that? :P

go sooners!

my family lived in pasadena for most of my post-high-school life, and i have never been as happy to see any team win, other than ucla (and that only because i went there for summer school in college several years).

boomer sooner!

*giggle* i don't even know what that means, but it's fun to say.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMERRRRRRR!
SOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNERRRRRRR!
Speaking of disrespect, did you happen to read the article by one of the Washington papers about what a bunch of backwoodsy hicks Oklahomans are? Not one of our players is half the hick Gesser is. Speaking of Gesser, our D treated him almost as brutally as they do Chrissy Simms. Gesser will be having nightmares about Jonathon Jackson and Teddy Lehman for years to come.
Next year: Nawlins and the Sugar Bowl!!!

No -- I missed that article! Pass it on if you've still got it!

We are so goin' to N'awlins if we run the table next season -- I expect that you'll be joining us.

Now hurry up and get your arse down here already so we can watch some bball!

Did anyone catch Jay Leno last night? He was quizing players from the Sooners team with just general knowledge. Some of the players couldn't even spell Oklahoma. It was very funny, no offense though. ;)

¤ ¤ credit: Kevin | 01.02.03 at 02:28 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Well, I'm from Washington...but I'm a Viking, so GO SOONERS!

¤ ¤ credit: buher | 01.02.03 at 02:32 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Now Kevin -- I find that very hard to believe since there's a state song from the Broadway musical (which also happens to be a school fight song) to help you sing it if you can't spell it! ;-p

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 01.02.03 at 02:35 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

well yeah, you AREN'T a pac 10 or big 10 team. in that light, the sooners shouldn't have played here. the rose bowl committee shouldn't have sold their soul to the BCS. they SHOULD have stuck with tradition and had ohio state come in and kick the shit out of washington state. lowest attendance at a rose bowl game in like 10+ years says that some others agree with me. and just back the hell off of keith jackson.

that being said, oklahoma was dominant, and i liked seeing that. I was particularly impressed with that RB of yours. i don’t intend for this to take a way from the win at all, but did it look like WSU was tanking it in the first half? i’m wondering if the players were showing their unhappiness with the coach bailing on them immediately after their championship season.

anyway, the “real” rose bowl is being played tonight. southern cal will be putting on a nationally televised football demo for the rest of the country, so don’t miss it!

¤ ¤ credit: slappin | 01.02.03 at 11:08 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

In case you missed it, the real demo was last night.

With the Big-10 now at 4-1 in the bowls and the Pac-10 at 1-5, I think I'll go with statistics. Sorry to say, you're in for a disappointing game.

¤ ¤ credit: jewdez | 01.02.03 at 03:56 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Slappin, why is it that smug, snotty conferences and coaches never can take the loss as "they whipped our ass". No, it has to be an injured QB, or a coaching move, or the tricky wind. When Bob Stoops loses (be it to OSU, A&M, whatever) he will state, "We were outplayed and outcoached". When other teams lose to OU, it's anything but we're just that good.

And you know what? With that elitest attitude, I don't WANT be be a Big 10 or Pac 10 team. I'll take our seven national championships instead, thankyouverymuch.

Keith Jackson is an ass.

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 01.02.03 at 04:10 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

We came ... we saw ... we KICKED THEIR ASS!
And presently being in L.A. this whole coast can bite my ass. Hell even your coaches are jumping ship for what ... THE DEEP SOUTH!

Yeah ... next ...

¤ ¤ credit: Kathy | 01.02.03 at 04:36 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

actually, gesser was saying that they just got beat, which was clearly true. gimpy, whatever. if he couldn't play, then he should have sat down. yeah, i'm a pac 10 guy, always will be, and i do think we are the best. i'd rather SC win a rose bowl by beating michigan any day of the week then win the sears national championship trophy. that tradition means a hell of a lot more out here then you understand.

the second to last team i'm going to make excuses for is WSU. i just found it interesting that price is leaving after playing the loyalty card pretty loudly in the newspapers, and additionally, saying that (in regards to the USC/UCLA rivalry) if it were him, he'd tank a game if winning meant helping his rival(washington). great attitude coach, maybe your team did learn from you. i've been thinking about it, and i'm pretty sure that they just weren't ready and got worked, but that team is NOT as bad as they played yesterday.

yeah, i've seen the stats and it is embarrassing. pac 10 has been worked in the bowls this year. why even play tonight then? just fold the tent up now. let's wait and talk about stats tomorrow. it should be easy to find me.

just back off keith jackson. if someone doesn't agree with you, then you're an ass? then please, just call me ass.

¤ ¤ credit: slappin | 01.02.03 at 06:44 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

What the hell has Keith Jackson done for me in order to earn my respect except corner the phrase "Whoa Nelly!" and insult the team I live and breathe for. The words came out of his mouth that the Oklahoma Sooners didn't deserve to be there. Well you know what? He doesn't deserve to be a journalist after stating "Go Cougs" in his report last night either. Unbiased my ass. He is an ass.

And believe me, I understand tradition. It was created by Bud. Instituted by Barry. And resurrected by Bob. Longest winning streak in NCAA history. Top five winningest coach of all time. 11-1 against top 10 teams (updated to include the WSU win). And seven rings of gold. But now we have your "sacred" Rose Bowl trophy as well after our very first try. Guess we're still not worthy though...

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 01.02.03 at 06:48 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Hey, Slappin, just so you know, OU sold every ticket to the Rose Bowl that they were given. Within three days. They asked for more. Those were sold. The empty seats you saw at the Rose Bowl are thanks to Washington State *not* selling out their allotment of tickets, and then refusing to return their unsold tickets to the Rose Bowl so eager OU fans could fill up your precious Rose Bowl. And we would have.

Oh, and Keith Jackson sucks ass hair. One good voice does not a broadcaster make.

¤ ¤ credit: dick | 01.02.03 at 07:05 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

100-yards for a touchdown by the Hawkeyes -- yeah, I'd say that Southern Cal demo isn't quite ready for release yet. You? ;-)

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 01.02.03 at 08:17 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Oh. Oh. Wait. Was that a 65-yard USC catch and TD for a tie? It just. Got. Interesting.

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 01.02.03 at 08:21 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

"Now Kevin -- I find that very hard to believe since there's a state song from the Broadway musical (which also happens to be a school fight song) to help you sing it if you can't spell it! ;-p"

Actually, that was another question they asked. They asked which Broadway musical took place in Oklahoma, they had no idea there even was one. It should rerun next Thursday morning, I'll try to digitize it.

¤ ¤ credit: Kevin | 01.02.03 at 09:25 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

OUCH! 38-17. Hawks were outplayed. Banks had a game that reminded me of his first game (where he threw 2 of his 4 INTs of the season) against Iowa State. Carson Palmer proved he deserved the Heisman by having an outstanding game.

Still, win or lose I'll stick with my Hawks. I cheered for Kurt Ferentz when he was 1-10, so 11-2 is pretty darned good. No, I won't drown my sorrows in a keg (although that's tempting) but it was sad to see Brad have such an off game. The Hawks looked like a team that was off for a month and a half and I think that sums it up.

¤ ¤ credit: Bill | 01.03.03 at 12:27 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Oh, one more newsworthy item: Nebraska went 7-7 this year; NOT a winning season, so their record is snapped. They had 40 consecutive winning seasons. Now Central College (in Pella, Iowa) holds the longest streak of consecutive winning seasons in NCAA football by a wide margin at 42 seasons. (Linfield holds the longest in college football at 48, but it is split between NAIA and NCAA).

¤ ¤ credit: Bill | 01.03.03 at 12:33 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

You said it very well, Bill! Sorry about the loss!

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 01.03.03 at 12:33 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

no, you see, you still don't get it. i didn't say oklahoma didn't play well, nor that the fans didn't support their team or sell tickets. i would expect nothing less of them. i know who didn't show up, and i blame it on the BCS (well, maybe mike price a bit too), not oklahoma. i still think they should have been playing in miami or new orleans or wherever. just leave some traditions alone. period. i actually enjoyed what happened to the rose bowl powers-that-be this year. they got a rude awakening as to what could happen to them being in the BCS. will things ever be the way they were? i can't imagine they will, i'm just kind of lamenting that.

and look, i took pains not attack anyone personally. my job is to just talk crazy west-coast sports trash. don't get so chippy.

now, if you want to discuss football and statistics, i'll do that somewhere else.

¤ ¤ credit: ass | 01.03.03 at 12:06 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

But the day the Rose Bowl organization "sold their soul" the BCS, they had to clearly understand they couldn't stick with the "tradition". Last year, it was almost sacrilege that the Bowl wasn't held on New Year's Day (because of the national title game date) after the parade. But that certainly wasn't Oklahoma's fault (although another Big XII school, Nebraska, barely showed up). And this year, Oklahoma took their fair share of blame for being there -- nothing our school could control. We were invited, and we'd be insane to turn it down. For the purists to start a backlash against our program over it is inexcusable. Again, if you align yourself with an organization like the BCS for the almighty dollar -- then you have to accept the consequences it brings you. This year, the sacred trophy went home to Oklahoma. Last year, to Miami. If you don't like the favors and food, don't accept the party's invitation. And don't blame the guests that do and did.
