Diamonds are a girl's best friend
Have you ever noticed that when magazines give you alternate-gift suggestions for high-ticket merchandise purchased by the stars it's never quite the same -- and more often than not, completely off the mark. For example:

shoes

Now you tell me how the second pair of dress sandals is even remotely close in look/style to the first pair purchased by Mariah Carey... Let's see. Both have high-heels. Ok, that's one. Both have t-straps (sort of). That's two. First pair is dainty, festive, and covered in crystals. Butterfly adornments maybe not quite your style, but definitely would work for formal occasions. Second pair has three ankle straps, three toe straps, and "beaded detailing" that looks more like dominatrix gone horribly wrong. And oh yeah, one is silver and one is black. Yep, the resemblance is striking! Next example:

watches

Christina Applegate purchased the (red) watch by Michele priced at $995.00. It has 80 hand-set white diamonds totaling more than half a carat, a squared-oval case, and red lizard strap. US Magazine suggests the white alternative. The face is covered with crystals instead of diamonds. I'll give them that. But the (non-lizard skin) strap is white, the face-shape is thin and pointed, and the numbers are more scripty than the blocky-funky art deco numerals on the red number. How can they even compare the two? I think the comparison pretty much stops with, "Well they're both watches..."

I really wish some of these magazines would let me do the comparison shopping for a change. Of course, I would expect to keep the test-items!

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Okay, I'd be the first to admit that I'm so *NOT* in fashion...But A.) I wouldn't wear EITHER of those shoes...(OUCH)...and the watches...I just don't find either that appealing...so...do I just not get it? Am I THAT out of touch with fashion?

Not too out of touch, IMHO. I rarely wear heels because Todd and I are the exact same height flat-footed and I tower over him (going over 6') in heels. On the watches, I might wear the red one every now and again (definitely not daily), but no way, no how would I be dropping over a grand after taxes on it!

Hah...my man WISHES I would wear shoes like that. It would save him a LOT of back pain. He's 6'5", I'm 5'5"!

hmmm..i can't see the pictures..are there supposed to be pictures?

¤ ¤ credit: Ruthie | 12.15.02 at 09:36 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

In my entry or at the US Magazine site? But yes to both...

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 12.15.02 at 10:17 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I... want those shoes. The silver ones, not the ugly black ones. Not that I really want to wear them (because I'm sure I would break my ankle in them), but I just must have them. It's one of the few very female genes I have in me - the shoe gene :\

I see no pictures either...

no pictures in the entry, just blank spaces. also in the individual entry and in the comments.

Strange -- they're showing up on the Mac and both PC versions of IE!

Try typing in:

Get both images to load, and then hit refresh. Tell me if you see them then. Might be a cache thing.

I see pic's.

I also thought 'dominatrix' right away with the black shoes. They almost look like opposites however maybe both are something Mariah would wear?

Secondly, the white k-mart watch is no comparison! ick yuck blah!

Nope, still can't see them after a refresh, but I can if I type in the direct link. I'm on a PC, IE 6.

¤ ¤ credit: Cheryl | 12.15.02 at 11:41 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I've got IE 6 on my Dell and they show up just fine. I give up! :-)

Hey, now that you rebuilt with that new post, they're there! Who knows?

¤ ¤ credit: Cheryl | 12.15.02 at 11:57 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I changed the paths, too -- put 'em in a different directory. I think I got hit by Friday the 13th a couple days late. *g*

Okay...so I am a geek. Why would people feel the need to copy the stuph that some celebs wear? Why can't people make choices on their own?

I am 5'10", and have been this height since the age of 14. Never learned to walk in high heels. Mike is also 5'10", and he never learned to walk in heels, either (LOL!). I like it best when we are the same size!

I do like the expensive red watch, though...but not $995 worth! Hey...they could put my $30 Red Sox watch next to this, and compare...it looks as much like the red watch as that K-Fart thing does!

We need Robyn to do our comparison shopping! And she shoudl get to hire US as testers! And we ALL get to keep the merchandise! LOL!

i see the pics now too...how weird..

¤ ¤ credit: Ruthie | 12.16.02 at 02:58 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Oh I'm definitely with Christine with an M. I decided I wanted a watch as a joint Xmas/b'day pressie a year ago. Having assembled the money, I went into most of London's top department stores to look at watches. I could get no end of watches made by people famous for making clothes - DKNY, Calvin Klein etc - and very few made by people famous for making watches:)

Heels - crippling! Nothing sexy about hobbling.

OK, I got the fake watch and heels ... is there a dress I can get too?

P.S. Thanks for the gift ideas!

you've said what i've thought every time i've ever looked at one of those articles. perhaps they have a small selection of stock images to select from... i think they might do it on purpose to remind us poor people that we can never have what the celebs have... boo.

¤ ¤ credit: jeanine | 12.16.02 at 03:03 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I think articles like these are "we need a quick article to finish this issue! Let's do another bogus expensive vs. cheap article using the samples people have sent us to hype *digging in the sample bags* ". Or maybe this type of article is the kind they give a new writer to test them out. Am I too cynical??

¤ ¤ credit: Lauri | 12.16.02 at 03:33 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

This is more similar to the watch, no?

¤ ¤ credit: melly | 12.17.02 at 01:53 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

*ding, ding, ding* Melly is our new personal shopper!
