I do believe this means war
Ok, I'm sorry -- but this "story" is complete and utter BS. Forget about the hit Warren Sapp gave that started it all for just a second. Sapp and Favre were joking on the field 'til the very end so it couldn't have been that big of a deal.

I saw the confrontation live. I saw it unedited. And Sapp went up to Green Bay's Coach Mike Sherman at the end of the game, all smiles, to shake his hand and say "good game" (which we all know deep down means you sucked ass today and we didn't) -- but still -- it was in the name of good sportsmanship. The thing I've noticed being edited out of every press report since is that the first words out of Coach Mike Sherman's mouth to Sapp when refusing to shake his hand were, and I quote, "FUCK YOU." Not, "What you did was wrong." But rather, "FUCK YOU." Then Sapp got pissed, and then the heated exchange began.

You can fine Sapp. I'm sure his aggressive actions towards another coach post-game might warrant it. But if you fine him, you'd damn well better fine Coach Sherman as well. He is in the position of authority when representing his team. And when he walked up to another one of our players -- who again, was being sportsmanlike as he approached the coach -- and started off with, "FUCK YOU," well all bets are off. He got what he deserved. I agree with Sapp. If you think you're so tough Coach Sherman, put a jersey on.

Did Sapp need to make the hit that started this all? Probably not. But we're seeing a zoom-in of that hit only when saying that -- not the action going on around him in 360°. And we're not hyped up on adrenaline during one of the biggest games of the year. Even Favre said he wanted to wait and look at the film before commenting. And the hit Sapp gave was legal. It was not flagged. Sapp clearly stated he was protecting Brian Kelly in the post-game press conference. This isn't Pop Warner or flag football. This is the NFL. And if the refs didn't think it warranted a yellow cloth "FUCK YOU" to Warren Sapp, who the hell is Coach Sherman to give it? I can guarantee you Coach Holmgren wouldn't have shown the same lack of class back in the day.

Warren Sapp: "I've got two or three [blockers] on me. We get a pick, Brian Kelly is running all over the field. I see a guy going at my man, I put a lick on him. What's the problem? I didn't hit him below the waist, there's no flag on the play. Is this not a contact sport? Nine referees on the field didn't find anything wrong with it, and I'm sure they're looking at 99 [Sapp's number]. I don't care if they review it. It's nothing but the man's running after the ball and I put a lick on him."

End of story.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

all the newscasters in SD are calling it a cheap shot. cheap shot? it was a good, clean block that the guy didn't see comin. quite frankly, i don't think Sapp did anything wrong. sherman is just a little pussy, that's all.

"put a jersey on! put a jersey on!" i love it.

Cheap shot or no cheap shot, the Sherman didn't even let a word leave Sapp's mouth without spoutin' off "Fuck You". You could hear it plain as day. I saw it - I also saw the look of surprise and insult across Sapp's face. What ever happened to a little bit of respect? If he did have a cheap shot, why not wait and mention it respectfully so that we (the viewers) can give you credit for your claim. When you start off a vulgar disrespect, you lose all creditability. Let me ask you this Sherman, if Sapp had been the violatile one spoutin off "Fuck You's" - a player to a coach, all hell would have broke loose. Coaches should be held just as responsible as the players...outta line and Sherman owes Sapp an apology - forget cheap, unwarranted shot - the only one in this situation that gave a cheap, unwarranted shot is you Sherman, and your little potty mouth.

Forget calling Jerome Bettis 'the Bus", that outta be what we call Warren. He FLATTENED that guy.

BLAM!!

I feel bad when any player gets seriously hurt (unless it is Kurt Warner, however that is a whole 'nother issue!).

This IS football. I don't understand all these people trying to pussy-fy (that isn't a word, is it? oh well. It is now....)the game. It really pisses me off.

I agree though. If Warren gets fined then Sherman should be fined as well....

Take it from a guy who played defense and got "cracked" more than once by a tight end, when you your chance to dish out what you have been taking all game long you go for it. When a TE gets a solid crackback block its a "great play, excellent block", when a defensive played does it he is wrong? Anyone who has ever played defense can tell you there was nothing dirty about it and seeing someone on offense crying about it is a joke. If you can't take it then don't dish it out.

JE, that's pretty much what Howie Long said when he was arguing about it with Terry Bradshaw. I couldn't agree more!

A solid hit's a solid hit but, personally, I thought he led with his helmet. Or, as Madden likes to say, "with his hat."

¤ ¤ credit: Jon | 11.25.02 at 05:28 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Come On Robyn! Didn't you see the play? Kelly was being pushed out of bound, when over 35 yards away from the play, Clifton was just standing around watching the play wrap up and BOOM. Sapp blindsided him with a helmet-to-helmet hit. There was no way Clifton was going to be involved in the play. There was absolutely NO need for the hit. The hit was pure spite. Technically it may have been legal, but still that doesn't mean it was right. The hit on Daryl Stingly was legal, and it wasn't flagged, but everyone today knows it was a cheap shot, meant to HURT someone. I love a good tough game of football as much as anyone, but when you intentionally go out and try to hurt someone, you deserve to get dissed.

To paraphrase warren, After the ass-whupin the Packers got, I have all the respect in the world for the whole team, but none for number 99.

Man still running with ball = hits going to be made. Don't like it? Perhaps foozball may be more your style... And I'm obviously not the only one with this opinion.

And did you see the hit? It most certainly was NOT helmet-to-helmet.

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 11.25.02 at 05:38 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

sorry, joe. it's professional sports. you go until the whistle, even if you're 35 yds aways. hey, anything can happen, right? if a guy doesn't see the blocker coming, and he gets blocked, is that a cheap shot? no, it's a clean block.

and no fuckin way can you compare warren sapp to jack tatum. everybody KNEW tatum loved to hurt people. he freely admitted that he was out to hurt people. does sapp do that?

¤ ¤ credit: mikey | 11.25.02 at 05:40 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

From ESPN.com: "Sapp appeared to hit Clifton in the front of the right shoulder." (Photo here.)

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 11.25.02 at 05:48 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Also from ESPN.com: "I did what I thought I had to do," Sherman said. "I didn't want it to be confrontational. I just wanted to say what I felt was important. Chad wasn't there to represent himself."

Well call me blonde, but if you're not trying to be confrontational, I'd suggest not snubing a Defensive Tackle by refusing to shake their hand and starting off the conversation with "FUCK YOU!"

Sherman put the ass in class yesterday.

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 11.25.02 at 05:50 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

And after reading this...I love Sapp even more...

"Maybe it wasn't a (cheap) play and maybe I just overreacted … but I didn't think it was appropriate." -- Packers head coach Mike Sherman

Sapp responded afterward by suggesting Sherman cursed at him and then termed the Packers coach "a lying, (manure)-eating hound. … If I was 25 years old and didn't have a kid and a conscience, I would have given him an ass-kicking right there at the 30-yard line."

And I would have been right there passing out the popcorn and soda while cheering you on Warren!

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 11.25.02 at 05:57 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

*snicker*

I love how Warrens eyes bug out of his head when he talks. He is one ugly mofo...

I am glad Gruden is sticking by him.

Me loves Chucky!!

¤ ¤ credit: Jen | 11.25.02 at 07:53 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Just Look at the hit. He jumped UP to hit the guy. He was going for the helmet...

And yes mickey, he was trying to hurt the guy..
Sapp did not deny that he hunted Clifton out on the play...."I was a heat-seeking missile"

He was out to hurt him all along. And while Clifton was down on the ground with no feeling in his sxtremities, Sapp was "celebrating" his hit. I bet his mommy was proud of that one!

¤ ¤ credit: JoeO | 11.25.02 at 08:05 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Funny how every. Single. Sportscaster. On ESPN's NFL Countdown sees it differently than you do tonight Joe. You might try switching the channel on occasion. No, really.

But thank god for defensive heat-seeking missles. Otherwise, we might as well just pull the red flag off their waistlines and go have ourselves a big ol' pizza party afterwards.

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 11.25.02 at 08:12 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Don't be a 'tard JoeO. Take whatever blinders of hate for the Bucs and Sapp off and listen up. It was a legal hit. The film clearly shows there was no leading with the helmet.

This is football, not ballet. Sapp got a clean hit, it was CLIFTON'S fault that he wasn't a good enough player to pay attention and defend himself. But in your little flower world, maybe they should have held hands and sang? Whatever. Idiot.

The "celebration" was for possession of the ball. You don't know anything if you think Sapp was happy a guy got hurt. He didn't even know he WAS hurt. He may be the Mouth of the South, but Sapp respects the game. Get the vitriol out of your comments and stick them up your ass. That's where these posts seem to be coming from...

Oh wait, are you 13? Nevermind. Go to bed now.

¤ ¤ credit: dick | 11.25.02 at 08:15 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Jeesh dick, you really gotta lighten up! Someone disagrees with you and BOOM! Blindside them with name calling. Typical of someone who doesn't know what they are talking about. Arguing about football is about as much fun as watching it. Being a Packer fan for 40 years, you learn to give and take. Take a lesson from Robyn and back up your statements with facts. But when someone resorts to name calling just because they don't agree with you, Man, you got a problem! Take a deep breath and back away from the computer. You have been on for too long!

¤ ¤ credit: JoeO | 11.25.02 at 11:10 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Dick just happens to be my husband. I suggest you step off...

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 11.25.02 at 11:13 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Look, there've been more than enough heated words here by both Packer and Buc fans, so let's try a little rationality on both sides, shall we?

First, let's have some respect for Warren Sapp. He could've completely lost it and gone apeshit on Sherman and his coaching staff, but he was smart enough to restrain himself and keep the war to words rather than blows. That will garner him some respect in my book.

Second, let's have a LOT of respect for Clifton. Dick, that's a man who took a hit that you or I would've been snapped by. You may be pissed at JoeO for his comments, but suggesting that a lack of athleticism or awareness justifies his injury is ridiculous. No one should have to go through what he's going through right now, but none of us can change it. Let's not add insult to injury.

Third, let's have a little respect for Sherman. Could YOU walk up to Warren Sapp and say Fuck You to his face? I think not. I'm 6'4" and 350, I played OT for 4 years in high school and 2 years in junior college (before I had my knees rolled on and blown by a DT) and *I* would call Sapp "sir." Sherman was standing up for what he felt was a wrong to his player. That takes serious balls, as well as a dash of stupidity. To suggest that he should have done otherwise is ludicrous.

As a Packer fan, we have a lot to complain about. Favre's picks, Glenn's poorly-run routes, a non-existant running game (due mostly to O-line injuries) and a hot-tempered coach. Let's leave the determination of what is/isn't a clean hit to the officials.

As Bucs fans, you have a lot to celebrate. Just ask yourself one question: if Kyle Turley puts Sapp out next week with a clean hit, would you react any differently than Sherman? I think not. Football's a game of emotion, for better or worse. But as fans we don't have to add fuel to the flames in a bad situation.

I'm sorry, but in a position of authority and respect, NO coach has the right to walk up to a player and say "FUCK YOU!" NO coach. If he has a problem, he can take it up with the refs. He can take it up with Coach Gruden. He can take it up to the League. But an opposing team's coach has absolutely zero, zilch, nada business coming up to another player fully suited up in their Sunday armor and mouthing off like that. And he's very lucky he just got an earful from Sapp, and not a mouthful of blood when Sapp had enough restraint (with a little help from others) to not knock his teeth out over it. I will not respect that out of anyone with that much authority and that little class. Ever.

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 11.25.02 at 11:42 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Robyn, I am afraid I have to agree with you on that one. When I first saw Sherman's antics, I thought I was watching the Jerry Springer show. He may be pissed at sapp (like I am), but take the situation and use it as a motivater. Post the picture of the hit on the chalkboard and never let your players forget about it. Hopefully we will meet again this year in the NFC championship game and THAT'S where Sherman and the boys need to do their talking. Not in some bush league ambush on the sidelines.

Justin, thanks for trying to bring some reason back into our argument. I gotta agree with you, the Pack just sucked Sunday and the Bucs were the better team. sapp and the rest of the d-line just owned the Packers. I just hope we get a chance to make up for the poor play in January.
