We will, we will, Fock you!
Last week, OU announced that Oklahoma Memorial Stadium (not to be confused with Owen Field as we have separate names for our stadium and field...don't ask...) would be renamed. The Gaylord family -- hated by just about every single Oklahoman in and out of the state -- had donated 12 million towards the stadium's expansion and completion. Because of their generosity the Sooner Shrine will now be called "The Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium".

Not that gay isn't a lovely word -- it just doesn't seem to go with a football stadium. So almost immediately Sooner fans began to dub it the Gaylord Focker Memorial Stadium instead. Rally cries such as "Rock the Fock", "If this Fock's a Rocking, don't bother kn- kn- knocking!", "Fock the Kasbah", and "Fock Me Amadeus" were heard. For those about to Fock, we salute you! Who says not everything can be bought?

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

I fucking hate when they rename stadiums and shit. Drives me nuts!!!

Drives me nuts, too! Even worse, all of the Bowl games with stupid corporate sponsors now. Can't we just go back to the Fiesta, Sugar and Orange Bowls, etc. -- without Tostitos, Nokia, and FedEx in front of them?

Hehe, but I'm sure the student body is having a wonderful time setting the name "Focker" indelibly as part of the stadium's title for generations to come :) Speaking of which, I hear rumors that there will be a "Meet the Fockers" sequel ...

I don't like the name Gaylord on the stadium and would rather have no name except in honor of those who have served our country and have died protecting it this last century. However, I don't want to see a corporate name either.

What really disturbs me is the ugliness of the stadium. I drove by Lindsay on my way from Minnesota to my home in Texas a couple of weeks ago and, being an OU grad, I thought that I would drive by to see what all the commotion was about. The stadium is MONSTROUS! It is huge. Its immensity takes away from the rest of the campus, which is basically small and compact. Why are Sooner fans so concerned about the size of their d--ks that they have to have something like this? Why wasn't this stadium done right in the beginning? The University "U" could have been made into an Oklahoma "O" and then then the two tiers could have been put on them. Why do we basically have to have a second tier built for the high-rollers, oil barrons, and potentates? Heck, I could't see from the 66th row on the three-yard line when I was going to school back in the late sixties and early seventies! It is ugly and too big the way it is.

And yeah, Gaylord screwed a lot of Okies during the time he was alive. Maybe there is no God afterall!

I, for one, happen to look at the photos of the new stadium construction with reverence and awe. You've heard the quote:

"We want to build a university our football program can be proud of." —Bud Wilkinson George Lynn Cross (my book quoted the wrong source - sorry)

Well I fully believe there wouldn't be a University of Oklahoma as we know it today if it weren't for Owen Field. And because just about every game these days sells out, as they should, I'm quite thankful to have the extra chance at seats when I do make it back home now.
