If you believe, they put a man on the moon
If we can build space shuttles that have survived repeated liftoffs, orbits, and re-entries -- why oh why can we not make bloodtests that require no fasting beforehand? Todd is on his way home to pick me up for 'routine bloodwork' in an hour. But I haven't been able to eat or drink anything since last night. Robyn. At 2:15 p.m. Without caffeine. Not a pretty picture... I don't have needle-phobia. They can suck the blood out to their heart's content. They just damn well better have a 20 oz. Coca Cola waiting for me on the other side of that curtain! Screw the Snoopy bandaid. (Although that's always a nice touch.)

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

hey. while pokin ya with the needles, why can't they just fill up another one with some coffee and inject the caffeine straight in?

now that's instant coffee.. er.. caffeine .. whatever.

I have the same needle-phobia. And everytime I go to the damn doctor they find some reason to give me a shot or take blood. Normally is a bloodsugar level test but this past time it was a CBC scan.

Ouch! Hope it isn't too painful and you get your caffeine soon.

I hate that. Luckily, I go to Goddard when I can go get my tests done whenever. So if the doctor says "fasting" I say "okay, see you in the morning!" Hopefully by the time this posts you'll be sitting in the doctors office and the caffeine will be there soon!

All better now! Bloodsucking was quick and painless, and Todd took me for a drugstore-style cherry Coke at Steak 'N' Shake afterwards! :-)

When you eat anything, a lot of it gets converted to glucose over the next several hours and pumped into your bloodstream. There it sits until your pancreas produces enough insulin to shuttle much of it into your cells. If you get a blood glucose test before that process has completed, you will get an artifically high result. By fasting, you ensure that the test will identify your baseline BG level. Therefore, if it's too high, you know you really have a problem.

The trick to these things is to get the blood drawn first thing in the morning. That way, you can count all that time asleep as part of the fast.

Or maybe you knew all that already and were asking rhetorically, in which case I'm the Zeppo.

Yeah, I knew. Thanks! Diabetes runs very high in my family on both sides so I'm monitored very closely. And I have Lyme disease (have since high school), so bloodwork is no big thang to me. Still a big ol' pain in the arse though...

And 2 p.m. is morning to someone like me that goes to bed at 7 a.m. ;-) Muuuuuch easier to fast early morning thru noon than to fast in the middle of the night during my "dinner" time.
