And it just keeps getting better
Remember this mini-Bush rant last week? Well, well, well...what have we here?

"The mystery of the missing trifecta has been solved. Sort of.

In this space last week, it was noted that President Bush often tells audiences that he promised during the 2000 presidential campaign that he would allow the federal budget to go into deficit in times of war, recession or national emergency, but he never imagined he would 'have a trifecta'. Nobody inside or outside the White House, however, had been able to produce evidence that Bush actually said this during the campaign.

Now comes information that the three caveats were uttered before the 2000 campaign -- by Bush's Democratic opponent, Vice President Al Gore. The Post's Glenn Kessler found in the archives this promise from Gore: 'Barring an economic reversal, a national emergency, or a foreign crisis, we should balance the budget this year, next year, and every year.' Gore said that to the Economic Club of Detroit in May 1998, then repeated it at least twice more, in speeches in June and November of that year.
"

Read the full Washington Post article for even more recent Bush brushes with plagiarism. And this says it so much better than I ever could. Yeah, I'm so happy honor and dignity have been restored to the White House. (Link thanks to Dayop.)

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

What a moron. He just keeps on embarassing himself, doesn't he? I love it! You always post the best stuff.

If daddy hadn't bought his way through college, he might have learned that plagiarism is a big no-no, and eventually you will always be found out!

original thoughts are so hard to come by. of course, gore is no stranger to borrowing ideas either and making them sound like his own.

Ah, the well-worn and classic 'Well, your guy did it too, so there!' argument. One of my favorites.

¤ ¤ credit: todd | 07.03.02 at 07:29 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Hehe - well, the guy did claim to invent the Internet ;) But honestly, I miss the good ole days of great presidents - where are the men like Roosevelt, Wilson, Lincoln? I know this is a new day and age, but there has to be some good politicians out there who care more about the country than themselves. *sigh*

¤ ¤ credit: ste | 07.03.02 at 09:17 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

It's not that the "Well your guy did it too, so there argument" is supposed to be somehow strong. It's just attempting to point out the irony and audacity to throw stones when you back politicians like Clinton/Gore.

I mean, is anyone really in a position to point fingers when it comes to truth-stretching???

¤ ¤ credit: andy | 07.03.02 at 10:09 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

I point it out because it's TIRED. We could bring up the 'Oh yeah, well, your Democrat did this or your Republican did that' ad nauseum. As soon as a Republican is criticized, there is no one to defend his action, there is only the attacking of a Democrat. Sort of a political tit-for-tat.

But I agree Ste...where are the Statesmen? I can't think of anyone in the last fifty years who really has transcended politician and put the nation first ahead of his own interests. It's sad beyond measure.

¤ ¤ credit: todd | 07.03.02 at 12:17 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Besides the fact that even back in the day the Washington Post ran a full-length article that completely debunked the myth (yes I said myth) of Gore "claiming" to invent the internet... It was a quote completely taken out of context and used for others gain. Oh wait. Ann Coulter says that only happens to her.

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 07.03.02 at 02:47 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Yes I back a politician like Gore. I'd much rather have a politician with a silly "claim" of inventing the Internet than starting a war to make himself feel better and finish what daddy couldn't. So sue me. I hardly equate one with the other.

The ridiculous of the "your politician did something bad so you can't say anything about mine" argument goes beyond what mere words can express though. If a Democrat broke into the Republican National Headquarters today looking for information on the 2004 campaign, would that be "ok" because the Republicans did it already? Would you not be able to yell and scream and throw a hissy fit on Meet the Press because it happened once before? If a Republican slept with an intern in the Oval Office, would there be no need for an investigation and impeachment trial because we've "been there, done that"?

If History isn't about learning from your mistakes and making sure not to repeat them -- and using our very American voice to stand up when things go wrong and point them out -- then I don't know what I wasted four years putting that degree up on the wall for. Yeah, "my guy" may have done some bad in his time. I bet you didn't see the letter I wrote to my (Republican) US Representative asking for an impeachment hearing to MAKE SURE the truth got out, did ya'? But does that give me NO right to stand up and speak out when YOUR guy does wrong, too? I don't think so. Doesn't work like that. Unless of course the Constitution is just window dressing for the ones not in power at the time...

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 07.03.02 at 02:59 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Todd, I pretty much agree with you that this type of argument is a tit-for-tat and we could go back and forth with that all day. And I'm with you, will we ever have a President again worth really looking up to and admiring (i.e. a true statesman)? I'm not holding my breath on that one.

I guess my initial comment was more along the lines of a personal philosophy of not throwing stones when I know many of the walls in my house are glass.

Robyn, no of course I didn't see the letter you wrote to your Congressman. That's great, I did the same. It's one of the few "real" things we can do besides rant on the 'net. As for "starting a war to make himself feel better and finish what daddy couldn't." Maybe I misread that one, but it kind of felt like a kick in the gut. To think GWB or the US started this war? I don't know...again, hoping I misread.

I should stick to reading the non-political entries. You guys are fun to read and you have a great blog. Keep up the good work.

Yes, I think he purposely started this war -- or at least greatly encouraged it to progress along -- and so do a lot of other citizens. Having a terrorist attack happen and starting a war are not the same thing. No, I do not believe he allowed planes to be slammed into buildings, and just sat back smiling as they did... I don't think anyone saw that coming. I do think we were set up for a scenario where our government would be "needed" and would be allowed to start trampling on basic freedoms. Tell me that you haven't seen the news reports that indicate this was all known of in advance and "allowed" to happen anyway? Reports from higher-ups in the agencies he now wants to revamp and have a tighter control over -- people that got fed up for continually being blamed for not being on the ball, and started to point out they did see it coming and issued warnings as such -- and now have their organizational structure in jeopardy. Why is that? This isn't something that originally popped into MY head. And I think he's going to heat up things with Iraq just in time for the election. You don't think Clinton is the only President capable of a "Wag the Dog" scenario do you? So no, you didn't misread me there. It's how I truly feel.

I guess one of the main reasons it ruffles up my feathers is that Bush is copying the very man he told us all not to elect. The one Republicans rush to make fun of if their candidate is put down. He didn't choose to quote McCain and spin it off as his own. He chose to do it to Gore. If Al is truly so evil and non-Presidential worthy -- why base the jokes touting "your" administration at fundraisers on HIS words?

Anonymous comments without name, e-mail address, and/or URL are subject to deletion. This one was. At least I have the balls to state my opinion with my name and identity attached to it. Coward.

And by the way, for the record, I would have voted for McCain had he been the candidate selected. Gore was not "my" candidate. I felt him the better of the two choices at hand.

Don't blame me. My country voted for the other guy.

Just checking in quickly one last time on these comments to make sure you know it wasn't me that left the anonymous post you had to delete. I'm assuming you can tell that anyway with the IP addresses.

As for who started the war, I'm ok with just leaving it as we couldn't be farther apart on that opinion. In a way, that's what makes these comments sections interesting - the differing views. I absolutely do equate the terrorist attack on 9/11 with starting a war and I place the blame squarely on the shoulders of the bin laden's of the world whose stated desire is to kill Americans. And I don't really care when things get heated up with Iraq. I see them as a very real threat. I belive Saddam would destroy or greatly harm this country given the opportunity. As such, I don't think the US can afford to sit back and accept the status quo until he does do something. Hopefully we learned that lesson with ObL.

Have a great and safe 4th. It's the pics like the one at the top of the page that keep your readers coming back : ).

Well gosh darn it, now you got me wanting to make a comment Muhahaha *queue the evil laugh*

I don't blame (and we've discussed this before) parties for much of anything. Yes, parties as a whole tend to muck things up from time to time, but I blame individual people. I blame Clinton for sleeping with an intern, I blame Reagan for infomercials, etc. If Bush was to sleep with an intern or well, heck, anyone other than the person he is married to...he should be gone, bye, cya, don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you. My goal in life is to be fair. To everyone. No one, my wife included (God rest her soul), was treated by me with special rules or allowed to do something just because they were so and so. So I certainly wouldn't protect an adulterer because he was a Republican. As for Clinton, he lied on the stand. To me that was one of the biggest slaps in the face by any President ever. He should have stepped aside, obviously he has impaired judgment and let Gore take over. But I digress.

No doubt in my mind that Gore is a smarter man and better talker than Bush. A better salesman some would say. Gore is more Presidental others say (hmm...no one said that about Clinton) and I might agree. But Gore sounds too sarcastic at times, to patronizing. It's almost as he is better than us.

As for the 9/11 tragedies, I know how I feel and I'm no more right or wrong than anyone else. But I certainly don't think Bush knew which planes, which places or who was going to do it. I don't know what he knew, but can you possibly imagine us blamming the president (any president) for every single incident that happens in the US? How on earth can they know everything? I only know one person who can do that and he aint talking. Who told Bush what? What exactly did they tell Bush? What did his advisors recommend?

Hmm..so much more to write but it's a comment section and it's not my blog. Sorry Robyn but I was having fun! :-)

Just wanted to add another voice of disgust over Bush. Glad I found your blog!

And on that note, two things to remember:
Sound advice is exactly that...95% sound and 5% advice.

Opinions based in my posts should not be construed as fact, only my opinion. Your mileage may vary. :-)
