Reality Bites
So I'm sitting down paying bills tonight, and figuring out what gets paid this weekend as well after Todd's next check. While doing the mental math I flip through the calendar and think "mortgage check...bills check...mortgage check...bills check...", but notice that "extra paycheck" is written in Todd's handwriting on a payday for the mortgage. So I called him in and we did some fast page-flipping and calculations. Oops. Big oops.

You see, he gets paid on an every-other-week system rather than the first and fifteenth of the month. This leaves us with an "extra" paycheck each year that falls just so -- meaning it's a bills-free and mortgage-free two weeks. This year, it was "supposed" to be at the end of July by our original calculations as recorded on the calendar. But it's not. Math is hard and we screwed up. It's the check at the end of August.

Why does it matter, you might ask? Because the end of July is when we planned on booking (and paying for) everything relating to Gnomedex. Now that "extra" check will be showing up the week after the conference. Meaning...in the grown-up world...we won't be showing up. We just don't have the money out of our normal day-to-day budget to swing something that massive.

Surprisingly, I've taken it quite well. Normally I'm prone to throw huge, massive hissy fit tantrums in such instances. But instead I'm just bummed like I've let people down. Not that it revolved "around" me...but there were so many people I wanted to meet and get the chance to know face-to-face. Now I'm left with maybe next year...

We've decided to book a fall trip to New Orleans instead at the end of August. This October will be the 10th anniversary of when we met and first started dating, and the 7th anniversary of when Todd proposed. And we did marry there after all... So there you go. The true joys of being a one-income family. Anyone want two Gnomedex tickets real cheap -- it's New Orleans or bust now. Sorry Chris.

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Wow! Just when i was considering going just hoping to be at next table so i could enjoy the laughs, this bombshell drops.Wouldn't be the same without ya.I hadn't made plans because didn't know if it will conflict with work. Hope this hasn't completely ruined your day.*hugs* :( :)

I think I'm too pouty to yell. Gimme a couple of days. Then I'll probably move on, get another vacation, but there'll be a 10 minute period here I'll be inconsolable.

Loved the Austin Powers reference, BTW...
So sorry that you aren't able to go. Ever considered putting it on credit for the short time? *ducks* I know that some people don't do it, but you gotta do what you gotta do...

Ew, Robyn that sucks for you and Todd. I had to cancel my trip to BlogCon in Las Vegas when I realized that 5 days would cost me $2000 (Canadian $). But I was so damn bummed about missing it I pulled some things off my "Stuff I Must Have" list and re-booked the trip a few days ago. Hopefully something will work out for you two.

Robyn,

Sorry you guys aren't able to go. I know how much it sucks to be a grown up sometimes. It hits close to home for me because there is no vacation for me this summer either. You're right man, reality does bite!!! *grumbling*

¤ ¤ credit: statia | 06.18.02 at 11:31 AM | link--this ¤ ¤

Yeah, what Susan said. As I was re-reading your post (yes, I'm still in denial), that's what I was thinking... put the stuff on credit card (assuming that you have one). When your check shows up, then you can pay the piper. See? Happy happy. Happy Robyn, Happy Todd, Happy Gnomies and bloggers who want to meet you. Happy everything!

Remember, every time someone backs out of Gnomedex, God kills a server (okay, that's the best I could come up with). Please. Think of the servers. (Or think of it as a great graphics challenge!!)

Aren't adult paychecks fun? But hey, at least you get them more than once a month. I don't get paid until around the 8th of each month. Imagine how much fun that is to account for...

All right, Robyn. All I ask is that you think of the Elvis impersonators. (Or some other random persona.)

¤ ¤ credit: Gretchen | 06.18.02 at 12:16 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

When I read that you were going to go to Gnomedex instead of BlogCon I was inconsolable. I wanted to meet you and Todd. Gretchen and I fought about it (well, not really) and I finally came to terms that at least you were going to be somewhere.
Now you aren't. That sucks. I'd rather see you going to Gnomedex than not going anywhere.

Oh Robyn that sucks! I'm sorry you guys aren't going, but I know you two are going to make up for it in Nawlins. Whoohoo!

(and if I had more than two pennies, I'd get the tickets from you, but I be BROKE)

Susan and Gretchen, we had a period in college where we were both VERY irresponsible with credit cards. It took us five years to get in the house because of it. Massive credit rebuilding was in order. We're on one income now, so if we can't do it with the budget in hand -- we don't do it. We purposely have cards with very low credit limits (not enough for airfare, hotel, car rental, meals and 3 pet's boarding expenses). We use our Visa checkcard for everything.

We've simply got too many expenses already to charge vacations. They aren't an annual thing for us. It's why we haven't had one since '99. I wish we could throw caution to the wind, but we just can't. Too many past lessons learned...

I hear ya... I know that's why lots of people don't have credit cards, or like you say, have very very low limits. I VERY much commend your discipline! Likewise, the check card is our very best friend, and we avoid credit card stuff too.

*sigh* I understand your position, totally... I'm just bummed! *smile*

I know what you are feeling....balanced the checkbook this week and found a $600 deposit recorded twice....OUCH....being a grownup sure sucks sometimes.

But on the bright side...only 10 weeks, 2 days until Sooner football!

It's too bad that you couldn't show, but then again, nothing's perfect. Maybe you'll be there next year. =)

I'm not the only one who was irresponsible with credit cards?? I'm not saying I'm glad, but it seems like around here, everyone is smarter than we were in that situation........

¤ ¤ credit: statia | 06.18.02 at 06:35 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Agreed -- being grown up sucks.

There was one comedian who used to talk about how we should be born old and then go backwards... I'll tell you, you'd appreciate childhood, that's for sure.

Where you serious about ticket(s) for sale? What ya asking for one? If things improve for me I might be able to swing a small price for a ticket in the next few weeks. The one thing I am worried about is the fact I may have to bail myself come late July.
