This one flatlined

It couldn't have picked a better time to show up. I'm in the middle of week two working 12-16 hour days/nights coding. And Mountain Dew unveils...Diet Code Red. Yes, the diet version of the nectar of the gods. The original being a mere 170 calories per 8 oz. glass.

Too bad it sucks.

If you think Diet Coke has an aspartame after-taste, you ain't drank nuthin' yet! We both had high hopes, thinking the fine folks at PepsiCo would pull off a miracle à la Diet Dr. Pepper and make my summer diet that much easier to take. But no. It was not meant to be. Todd claims that the flavor numbed his taste buds for a good two hours. I wouldn't go quite that far, but I do know that 2-liter is going to go flat before either of us bothers to pour another glass. So if you try it yourself, do so at your own risk.

Summer soft drink war score:
Coca Cola (Vanilla Coke) - 1
PepsiCo (Diet Mountain Dew Code Red) - 0

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

How does regular red dew compare to vanilla coke?Sort of a Ginger vs. MaryAnn question.(maryann of course)Haven't tried either one.I'm talking soft drinks here.Which should i try first?Waiting with bated taste buds.

Token Brit student rearing her vacant head again... I second any questions about Vanilla Coke, I just don't get it. ;)

I used to drink a 12 pack of diet mt. dew a day at work. I'd even keep it next to my desk just because I believed the caffeine would get into my system faster if it was already at body temperature. I'm sure I'll be dead by 40 from it but hell, I got a lot of code written back then :-) And technically Red Bull is the real nectar of the gods!

Personally, as an avid coke (a-cola) fiend, I hated the vanilla coke. Actually wrote coke an email saying "What the heck were your testers thinking...." The only guy in our office who liked it is actually a pepsi drinker. So...maybe it works from that avenue.

I don't understand why everyone is astonished by a "new" Vanilla Coke, or has never heard of such a thing. They've been around for many, many years in malt shops; they are even sold in every neighborhood Waffle House. It's not a new thing, just as the Cherry Coke was around long before they put it in a can.

Ashley - I'm British! The only terminology I understand when it comes to coke is 'Coca Cola' or 'Pepsi'! We don't have all these new-fangled variations on the theme (well, we do have cherry cola but it's not nearly as popular) - take pity on me, please. :)

As for Red Bull - as a student I'm supposed to worship it, but personally I can't stand the stuff. Why it's so popular in the first place, let alone why everyone wants to combine it with vodka at every opportunity, I don't know...

The astonishment regarding the "new" Vanilla Coke is that it is pre-packaged. And like any pre-packaged flavored item, they are almost never as good as the "home-made" kind. So you either love it or hate it. I love it myself, kind of smells and tastes like a Captain Morgan's and Coke.

I don't drink Soda, but I've heard that Diet Vanilla Coke and Diet Lemon Coke taste like dishwashing liquid... :)

I can't drink "diet" soda of any kind. Just like I won't eat low fat ranch dressing. There are some things you just have to draw the line at. :)

Ooh, when I first saw the graphic, I couldn't wait to try it. Too bad it's not as good as expected, I'll still have to try it out for myself though. Diet Dr. Pepper and Pepsi One are my two loves, I can't drink the leaded stuff. It's the sugary aftertaste that gets me, I think it's from the science experiment my best friend did in 3rd grade, "How Coca-Cola Effects Your Teeth". She soaked a tooth in Coke, and it had turned black with decay. From then on, it was only Diet for me.

I personally like diet BIG RED. My friend and my boss are from San Antonio and "import" it from there for me. Can't get it in OK. I dole it out and save it for "special occasions". It's like drinking the red soda we used to get when I was a kid.

I have to agree with Mike, to me, if it ain't the real thing, it's just not the same. Diet and low fat don't come close to replacing the real thing. I'd rather risk high cholesterol and diabetes in the future than give up regular DP and Mt. Dew fixes :)

If you put enough Jack Danials in it, it all tastes pretty good.

Jason, Red Bull may give you wings -- but it also takes like carbonated Sweet Tarts. ;-)

And I agree, Ashley. I've been ordering vanilla Cokes at drugstore soda fountains and Sonics since I was a little kid. I actually don't mind the new one at all. It's not as good as a soda fountain's -- but then again, a plain Coke out of the can isn't as good as a soda fountain Coke either. The only thing that comes close is a Coke out of the 70s glass bottles that were kept ice cold in those special vending machines.

Stu, when Robbie was here he experimented by putting some of my Malibu coconut rum in a Vanilla Coke. And mmmmmmm.....

I have had the regular Code Red and it was OK. I like Mt. Dew and the Code Red wasn't what I expected.

A local DJ best described Mt. Dew as tasting just like Dr. Pepper mixed with 7-Up. I tried making that at the fountain at Texaco and it is nearly the same, 'cept for the red coloring.

Of course, they add the color to Dr. Pepper so it really could be both drinks mixed, after all Coca-Cola owns em both.

Have you had the Code Red slushees at 7-11? Yummy...mmmmmm... I love the original Code Red though (but don't much care for the regular Mountain Dew).

¤ ¤ credit: robyn | 06.04.02 at 04:47 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Code Red slush! Now I've gotta try that, too.

I'm not a fan of regular Mt. Dew either, I've always felt quite left out in the world of Dew drinking geekheads.

robyn... I am going to try that malibu and vanilla coke ASAP. Sounds goooooooooood!

¤ ¤ credit: Stu D. | 06.04.02 at 05:26 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I have tried and tried and tried so many diet sodas and yet to find anything I can stand. So, I'll stick to H20, thankyouverymuch.

¤ ¤ credit: meryl | 06.04.02 at 07:28 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

I'll take my plain old Diet Pepsi anyday. Okay, A Redbull and vodka is pretty damn good also ;)

¤ ¤ credit: Julie | 06.04.02 at 11:37 PM | link--this ¤ ¤

Sorta hoping there will be a Vanilla Diet Coke and it will be like the diet Coke with Lemon. Which means good!

Yeah the Mountain Dew Code Red really blows. But it may be because you're so used to the non-sugar type, I'd guess. My taste buds have changed since I started to drink Diet soda. I used to think diet soda sucked. Now, I guess I like it as long as it is really cold. warm soda tastes horrible.
