Satan's browser
So I have a question for all the smarty-smarts out there. What's up with the new IE 6.0 for Windows? I've had a few site owners write me now wanting to know why their site is suddenly all-centered. A quick note back saying, "You're running IE 6.0 now aren't you?", always returns a "yes" answer. I know to ask this because I lasted exactly 2 days on IE 6.0 on my Dell before pleading to Todd to bust it back to 5.5. Just about every site I viewed had centered text -- not to mention it sucking up resources faster than Todd sucks down Mountain Dew's Code Red. Going back to 5.5 (or viewing sites in 5.1 on the Mac) produced "normal" as-intended results.

What gives? Everyone I've encountered running 6.0 has had this centering problem now. Have you? And if you had/have the problem...did/do you know how to get around it... Thanks!

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

I'm using 6.0 on my desktop at home and work and 5.1 on my laptop and your site looks exactly the same on all of them, no centering for me! Maybe there's a setting somewhere that misconfigured?

This was before I skinned my site so the template was actually different when I saw my own centered. But since I get it so often, I know something funky is going on. Btw, you might try Christine's Venice skin unless she's tweaked it since...that was one that was always centered for me...

I knew I bookmarked this site for a reason:

You ROCK Dawn -- *thank you*! I was beginning to think I was losing my mind...

I use IE 6 and everything looks okey-dokey and not centered to me. I dunno!

The article Dawn linked explains perfectly why it's a problem on some sites and not others, Cheryl. Now it looks like I'll be doing a temporary upgrade again soon and making sure everyone is 6.0 compliant. Whee! :-) Thanks Bill!

Thanks for the great link...never had a problem, but now I know what to do to prevent them. :)

IE 6 and centered, si. But ain't complainin' cause I love Robyn in any shape or form. I advised Christine to use align="left" and that fixed it.

i've been getting A LOT of email from people telling me my site looks funky in IE 6.0, but it's fine in everything else. not only that, but IE 6.0 seems to have problems displaying js/dhtml scrollers. i am totally with you on this one--6.0 is utter crap!

Just when us web designers though that Netscape was dying and it'd be easy to design for just ONE browser, now there's differences between versions of IE? I give up !!!!!! (off to read the article now)

Here I always thougt that it was supposed to be centered, so I would have to say I do.
That and the damn silly program keeps freezing on me. If I could actually stop procastinating at get myself to re-install IE 5.5 I think I would be a happeir camper.

I've had another problem in IE5.5 that I can't seem to fix. I have sites built in 780wide pixel tables wiht no margins. These are a perfect fit for 800 x 600 set browsers in IE. On first load there is a scrolly bar but if you hit reload the scrolly bar goes away again .....
I'm stumped on that one.

I've had that happen before, too, Jo -- I swear these browser designers need less crack and more caffeine!

Here I thought you meant to center the text... Glad that the problem is resolved now!

I never upgraded to IE6.0 for a reason! But I thought I had fixed the Venice skin when someone told me that it was centered. Hmmm... I guess I'll have to look again!

I use IE 6 and everything looks perfect and not centered to me. I think there must be some other problem.

Sofie -- that's b/c we reinstalled IE 6.0 on another computer and fixed everything a couple days back when this post was made. But thanks for your post! :-)

Centered What does that look
like. Things seem fine to me
But i dowload all critical
updates and enhancements
(patches for w2k and ie6)
Maybe you just need to re-
install the OS! ;-)

Hey Robyn, does you by chance have the art work for that satan browser icon / gif. I was hoping I might be able to get it from you as I wanted to do an inkjet transfer and make a tee shirt as I really love that logo. It really shows the true nature of MS IE. If it is possible please let me know. Thanks! :-)

yes, but aren't all microsoft products work of "the devil"? [assuming we all know the endless links between the name bill gates and 666]

you might also like to complain about the dotted borders [on all versions]... all the dotted borders after scrolling start freaking out and making the neatest psycho-patterns :p... [hince the crack not caffiene theory mentioned above]... so yes i have stuck with ie5.5, but don't let that little "non-6.0" lingo confuse you... it's not perfect either

I don't like the new IE either. My sister upgraded and she HATES it. I'm staying with 5.5 for as long as I can.

Actually the problem is that IE 6 is finally starting to get more and more of the CSS 2 spec right... so all the code that tools like Dreamweaver and Frontpage produce - which at times can be a bit odd - is causing problems because it doesn't match the spec.

The table should inherit the center property of the DIV it is nested in... that is how the spec is layed out.
