Spaceballs - the breakfast cereal
Kids today are so ripped off. Besides the lack of Saturday morning TV for them (which is a whole 'nuther blog rant unto itself) -- no Smurfs, no Bugs, no Pac Man -- just news and the Today Show -- have you looked at non-Super Colon Blow cereals at the grocery store lately? I never grew out of the kids cereal phase. Bring on the Sugar Smacks ('cuz dammit they STILL have sugar), the Fruity Pebbles, the Frosted Flakes, the Fruit Loops, and the Apple Jacks! I remember literally standing in the cereal aisle for what seemed like hours (to me and my poor mom) when I was a kid trying to figure out which one had the best prize. And then having my mom want to kill me after we got home as I dumped the ENTIRE box of cereal out in a big mixing bowl to dig for the loot inside. Today they put mazes on the back of the box. "Ooooh, you mean I get to draw on it?! Well gimme a case then!" Kellogg's had it right a few months back by putting little Sesame Street beanies in all of their boxes. I darn-near passed out the day I opened my Rice Krispies to find a little Oscar the Grouch inside. But as quickly as the promotion started, it also ended, and the boxes went back to nuthin' inside. It's even more lame than the stupid cardboard squares you find in boxes of Cracker Jack now! Which brings me to...whatever happened to the cool tattoos...

Hey boy take a look at me...let me dirty up your mind...

Tattoos! I know I definitely scored some tattoos in a cereal box back in the day. I also remember getting a little record that was made out of some sort of floppy plastic material. That was the coolest. My mom was never one to give me the sugary cereals, though - she bought me a box of Lucky Charms once and I sat in front of the TV and ate all of the marshmallows out of it. :)
I always wanted her to buy me Cookie Crisp and she never would - I bought a box of it when I was in college and hated it. I knew that when I thought cereal was too sweet that I was getting old...

Lucky Charms! How could I forget to list me Lucky Charms?!? They're magically delicious! ;-)

Now they do stuff like put stupid CD-ROMS's on the boxes...usually a trial thing which doesn't work very well, just to get you to buy the full version of whaever crappy game they're selling this week.

Don't get me started about Cracker Jacks...$4.00 for a big box at Fenway Park..I hadn't had it in years, I open the box, look for the prize, and yes, it was one of those lame cardboard squares.

Some of the best toys I had were from cereal boxes. I forget which cereal it was, but they had all of these little plastic dinosaurs...I had the whole collection. Also, these propeller things that came from Trix...you put the propeller on this twisty stick, and used this tube thing to push it UP...it got its momentum from going up the twisty stick...and the propeller went zooming into the air.

Now they charge $4 - 5 bucks for a box of cereal, and whaddya get? Nothing!

Also...speaking of propellers...I know I am showing my age here...but does anyone remember *Quisp* and *Quake*? Quisp was a space alien with a propeller on his head, and his cereal was shaped kind of like flying saucers. Quake was some macho-type guy...a miner, maybe? I don't quite remember, and his cereal had some other shape, which I also don't remember. Anyway, even the commercials were fun to watch...Quisp and Quake fighting over whose cereal was better (actually, they were both the same, but for the shapes...they were exactly like Cap'n Crunch).

I was a Quisp girl, through and through!

Robyn, your sister got a WATCH in her cereal the other day. I don't know if it worked or not, but she was happy! I agree, you guys get ripped off on the Cracker Jacks, they used to have the coolest toys. Also, Sonic used to place the neatest little plastic animals on their drink straws.....I had a whole collection hanging by their tails from the rear view mirror in the car! I MISS those!
