But, just a question. While this will prevent anyone from just hopping on a link at work, will it prevent people from reading it through cache or something? They'll still be able to track him, won't they?

Yeah, obviously they can still read the site through cached copies if they really want to dig around. But as of tomorrow, he will no longer be surfing at work so there won't be anything to track. Today people were busted with what sites they visit and when (be it entertainment, news, sports, what-have-you). He didn't want his blog's URL up for corporate scrutiny. So since he won't be reading there or posting to there from work any longer, this is just added security.
